About the Role

The Primary Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of High Voltage (HV) Substation Primary Engineering deliverables across transmission and distribution projects. The role involves preparation, review, and coordination of primary design documentation, ensuring compliance with client specifications, industry standards, project requirements, and quality procedures. The position requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to deliver safe, efficient, and technically robust engineering solutions.


Roles & Responsibilities

Primary Engineering Design

  • Prepare and develop Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) for HV substations.
  • Design and review substation configurations and schemes including, Feeder Bays, Transformer Bays, Busbar Arrangements, Mesh Corner Schemes, Shunt Reactor Bays
  • Prepare Overall Equipment Layouts and Elevations for AIS substations.
  • Develop Maintenance Access Layouts ensuring safe operation and maintainability.
  • Prepare Cable Trench Layouts in coordination with civil and secondary design teams.
  • Perform Lightning Protection System calculations and prepare associated layouts.
  • Carry out Earthing System calculations and develop Earthing Layout drawings.
  • Prepare Typical Equipment Earthing details and installation drawings.
  • Perform Short Circuit Force Calculations for rigid and flexible busbars.
  • Develop Mechanical Interlocking philosophies and associated design documentation.

Engineering Documentation & Deliverables

  • Prepare Erection Key Diagrams and Bills of Materials (BOM).
  • Develop Lighting Design calculations and Layout drawings.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications for equipment and systems.
  • Support preparation of engineering deliverables during tender and bid stages.
  • Review supplier/vendor drawings and provide technical comments.
  • Ensure designs comply with client requirements, relevant standards, and project specifications

Coordination & Project Support

  • Coordinate with Civil, Electrical Protection & Control, Telecom, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Interface with project teams, vendors, and clients for technical clarification and design coordination.
  • Support design reviews, value engineering initiatives, and technical risk assessments.
  • Monitor design schedules and ensure timely delivery of engineering documents.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews and project meetings.


Skills & Experience Expected

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant discipline.
  • 5 – 10 years of relevant experience in HV Substation Primary Design Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of substation layouts, equipment clearances, earthing systems, lightning protection, and busbar design.
  • Experience in preparation and review of primary design deliverables for transmission and distribution projects.
  • Familiarity with UK utility standards and international engineering practices.
  • Experience in tender engineering and detailed design projects.
  • Experience working on UK National Grid and/or SSE projects will be highly preferred.
  • Exposure to international transmission projects and utility-based engineering standards.


Software Skills

  • AutoCAD 2023 (mandatory).
  • Knowledge of 3D Revit
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Raster Design.
  • Familiarity with engineering calculation tools and design software used for substation engineering.
