Job Description
Role Summary:
The Secondary Teacher Librarian is responsible for the management and development of the Secondary library in support of the programs it serves.
The Secondary Teacher Librarian acts as a catalyst for literacy and inquiry, supporting the development of students' research, analysis, and synthesis skills. By curating a diverse collection of resources (print and digital) and promoting a deep love for reading and literature across various cultures and genres, this role ensures the library serves as a vibrant, inclusive, and safe learning environment tailored to individual, pair, and group needs.
Beyond resource management, the position provides significant value by advocating for information literacy, advancing academic integrity, integrating ICT into the curriculum, and supporting staff in their interactions between the resources and skills that support learning.
Ultimately, the role bridges the gap between curriculum goals and student success by maintaining a functional hub of knowledge that supports the school curriculum.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Reading Champion
- Encourage and promote reading for personal enjoyment, with the aim of creating lifelong readers.
- Ensure students are provided with access and exposure to a range of formats and genres.
- Expose students to quality literature from a range of cultures covering current and classic themes relevant to today’s youth and the development of international mindedness.
- Collaborate with teachers to develop rich reading programs.
- Promote the library and its programs with a range of stakeholders, including families.
Teaching and Learning
- Develop student leadership opportunities through library activities.
- Support students in developing information literacy, research, and referencing skills through scheduled lessons and independent projects, informed by IB Approaches to Learning skills.
- Collaborate effectively with subject and classroom teachers as they plan and deliver units, complementing and energizing approaches to teaching.
- Promote academic integrity by providing resources to support proper citation and referencing practices.
- Support educators in the scaffolding of multi-modal literacies.
Collection Development and Management
- As a strategic curator, maintain and actively develop print and digital resources
- Coordinate the purchase of new library resources in consultation with leadership and budgets.
- Catalogue and promote new additions to the collection.
- Stay updated with trends in library management and best practices for academic support.
Sharing of Expertise
- Collaborate with St. Nicholas educators and librarians, IB coordinators, and other academic leaders to ensure alignment with the school’s mission and IB framework.
- Collaborate with librarian networks, locally and internationally.
- Support the leadership team through programme evaluations and school development
- Participate in the planning and development of ICT in the school.
- Advocate for student information literacy, including the ethical use of information.
Curriculum Development
- Remain current with regards to IB publications and documentation, ICT, and educational practices.
- Collaborate with teachers in the development, implementation and review of school policies that relate to the curriculum.
- Collaborate with the leadership team in the integration of ICT into the curriculum.
- Promote the development of literacy skills through the continuum.
- Providing support regarding the adoption of digital platforms.
Services
- Develop activities and events to promote reading and literature.
- Maintain and update displays in and around the library.
- Maintain an inviting, friendly and safe learning environment in the library.
- Ensure the library is a functional space for different kinds of learning (group, pair, individual).
General
- You are required to uphold the highest standards of safeguarding by strictly adhering to the School’s Code of Conduct, fulfilling all mandated reporting responsibilities, and maintaining a proactive duty of care to recognize and report any signs of abuse.
- All educational staff are expected to attend school meetings, professional development days and special events. Some of these events occur outside of regular school hours.
- The Secondary Teacher Librarian is expected to perform supervision duties within the library to allow access during non-teaching hours.
