Senior Software Developer
Contract: Temporary position for 6 months
Salary: £36,122 plus a £7,542 annual salary supplement

Job Role
A major public-sector organisation is seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer to join its Information Systems team.
You will be responsible for planning, developing and integrating related software components using an Agile approach, Microsoft Visual Studio and Azure DevOps.
You will work on a wide range of systems, from straightforward workflow and database applications to highly complex, business-critical systems that interface with cloud technologies.
You will develop a strong understanding of entire systems and take responsibility for sharing this knowledge with others. Working collaboratively with users and other technical disciplines, you will help establish what needs to be built and how it should be delivered.
You will also coach and mentor junior colleagues, ensuring that software meets users' needs and that all code is clean, secure, effective and developed in accordance with best-practice guidelines and quality-assurance processes.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:

  • Plan and lead the analysis and development of sets of related user stories using Agile processes, including liaising with users throughout the organisation to create technical specifications for work items.
  • Contribute to system design, develop an understanding of the entire system and take responsibility for teaching this knowledge to others.
  • Contribute to systems integration design and development, including identifying and understanding cross-system dependencies.
  • Design solutions and services with embedded security controls that are specifically engineered to mitigate security threats.
  • Design, code, test, review and document software components of medium to high complexity in line with agreed technical specifications.
  • Develop software using the latest Microsoft technologies, including ASP.NET Core MVC, C#.NET, Azure Functions, Entity Framework Core and SQL Server.
  • Support and maintain legacy systems developed using VB.NET, WinForms and WebForms.
  • Write clean, secure and effective code by adhering to software-development policies, standards and best-practice guidelines.
  • Develop, support and provide technical advice on cloud-based technologies, including Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams and SharePoint Online.
  • Develop and support software solutions that integrate with third-party software, including EPiServer CMS and Umbraco CMS.
  • Provide technical support for bespoke systems, including business-critical procedural systems, to ensure the smooth delivery of the organisation's core operational business.
  • Provide line management to Software Developers and Junior Software Developers, including performance monitoring, quality assurance, coaching and mentoring.
  • Provide advice and training to users and key stakeholders in the use of ICT systems, including delivering system demonstrations and preparing user documentation.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of relevant IT policies, strategies and standards.
  • Cooperate with other ICT colleagues to maintain effective computing services.
  • Undertake project-management duties.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and monitoring of IT security measures.
  • Undertake other duties consistent with the needs and level of the position.

  • Carry out any other duties reasonably required by the organisation.

Essential Criteria
Applicants must meet one of the following qualification and experience routes by the closing date:
Route One
1(a) Hold a Bachelor's degree or higher in one of the following:

  • Computing
  • Computer Science
  • Software Engineering
  • Another discipline relevant to Information Systems or Information Technology*

And
1(b) Have a minimum of two years' relevant experience in each of the three areas detailed below:


  • Application Development
  • Azure DevOps or a similar platform
  • Database Design

  • Route Two
    2(a) Hold an HND or Foundation Degree in Computing or another discipline relevant to Information Systems or Information Technology.*
    And
    2(b) Have a minimum of three years' relevant experience in each of the three areas detailed below:


  • Application Development
  • Azure DevOps or a similar platform
  • Database Design

  • Required Areas of Experience
    1. Application Development
    Applicants must have relevant experience of:

    • Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 or later
    • C#.NET and ASP.NET programming
    • Web programming using HTML, JavaScript and CSS
    • MVC architecture
    • Entity Framework
    • Azure Functions
    • Team Foundation Server or a similar platform

    2. Azure DevOps or Similar
    Applicants must have relevant experience of:

    • Agile development processes
    • Azure Boards or a similar work-management platform

    3. Database Design
    Applicants must have relevant experience of:

    • Database design, including logical and physical data modelling
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or later
    • Structured Query Language (SQL)

    Important Qualification Information
    Only courses with computing content of 50% or more will be considered relevant.
    Applicants are responsible for clearly demonstrating that their qualification meets the 50% computing-content requirement. Full details of all qualifications must be provided in the application.

    • List every module studied, including modules with no computing content.
