Role of Biomedical Engineer in Hospital Project A Biomedical Engineer plays a critical role in planning, execution, and operation of hospital projects. They act as a bridge between clinical users, hospital management, architects, consultants, vendors, and maintenance teams. Their involvement spans from conceptual planning to post‑commissioning support, ensuring safe, compliant, and cost‑effective medical technology deployment. 1. Planning and Concept Design Stage • Understand clinical requirements of various departments such as ICU, OT, Radiology, Laboratory, Dialysis, and Emergency. • Develop department‑wise medical equipment lists based on bed strength and hospital scope. • Support hospital leadership in technology selection and future expansion planning. • Assist in capital budgeting and cost estimation for medical equipment. 2. Design Coordination Stage • Coordinate with architects, MEP consultants, and interior designers for medical equipment integration. • Define load requirements, medical gas needs, HVAC parameters, and IT connectivity. • Ensure regulatory compliance with NABH, AERB, IEC, BIS, FDA, and CE standards. • Review layout drawings for patient safety and workflow efficiency. 3. Procurement and Tendering Stage • Prepare technical specifications and BOQs for medical equipment. • Participate in tendering process and technical bid evaluation. • Compare vendors on technical compliance, service capability, warranty, and lifecycle cost. • Support techno‑commercial negotiations. 4. Installation and Commissioning Stage • Ensure site readiness before equipment installation. • Supervise installation as per manufacturer and safety guidelines. • Perform Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ). • Verify acceptance testing and handover documentation. • Ensure user and technical training by vendors. 5. Operations and Maintenance Stage • Plan preventive and corrective maintenance schedules. • Manage AMC/CMC contracts and vendor SLAs. • Monitor equipment uptime, utilization, and downtime trends. • Maintain asset inventory and lifecycle management records. 6. Safety, Quality, and Compliance Role • Conduct electrical and radiation safety checks. • Support infection control practices related to medical equipment. • Assist in NABH/JCI audits and internal quality improvement initiatives. • Identify and mitigate equipment‑related risks.
