Lead Engineer

Macquarie Bank Limited

New South WalesFull-timeMid LevelOn-site

Job Description

At Macquarie, we are engineering the future of financial services. Our teams are building the secure, reliable, and scalable platforms that power our Digital HQ – our hub for enabling our employees to be more productive in their day.

We are a global financial services group operating in 30 markets with 57 years of unbroken profitability. At Macquarie, you’re empowered to shape a career that is fulfilling and creates value. You will bring your insights and expertise to the task at hand and feel supported as you make your own kind of impact for a better future.

What role will you play?

In this role, you will balance hands‑on technical work with team leadership responsibilities. As a Lead Engineer, you’ll mentor and support the professional growth of a small team through regular one‑on‑one sessions, ongoing feedback, and career development planning. You will drive execution by leading sprint planning, managing team priorities, and removing obstacles to ensure timely delivery of high‑quality software.

You’ll set high standards for code quality and operational readiness, collaborate closely with Product Managers and Business Analysts, and take ownership of your team’s outcomes by meeting strict Service Level Objectives for availability, performance, and security.

Utilising your technical expertise, you will lead the design and architecture of scalable, secure microservices and systems that meet the financial industry’s requirements. You’ll actively contribute to the codebase, focusing on complex and critical components, and conduct thorough code reviews to maintain quality. Your role includes shaping the technical roadmap, making key decisions on architecture and tools, and serving as the technical escalation point to guide your team through challenging production incidents and debugging issues.

What you offer

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • 3+ years of experience in a formal or informal leadership role (e.g., Tech Lead, Senior/Staff Engineer with mentorship responsibilities)
  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Java, C#, Go, or Python.
  • Proven experience designing and building complex, distributed systems
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to think strategically about technical and business challenges
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical ideas to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

We love hearing from anyone inspired to build a better future with us. If you’re excited about the role or working at Macquarie, we encourage you to apply.

What we offer

At Macquarie, you’re empowered to shape a career that’s rewarding in all the ways that matter most to you. Macquarie employees can access a wide range of benefits which, depending on employment type, include:

  • 1 wellbeing leave day per year
  • Up to 5 additional service bonus leave days per year
  • Up to 20 weeks’ paid parental leave for primary caregivers along with 12 days of transition leave upon return to work, and 6 weeks’ paid leave for non‑primary caregivers
