Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is proud to be part of the provincial implementation of minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs), an initiative aimed at enhancing nursing practice and strengthening quality of care across the health system. mNPRs set the minimum number of nurses providing care to patients on a given unit. In British Columbia, mNPRs are developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) and health organizations. Salary range: CAD $41.42 per hour – CAD $55.91 per hour. Responsibilities The Surgical Support Nurse acts as an auxiliary support for clinical care staff to enhance patient care at transitions in care by providing nursing care to patients as guided by clinical and operational priorities. This includes, but is not limited to, providing patient care at admission, discharge, and transfers between care areas and facilities.

Education & Experience Current practising registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Two (2) years recent, related clinical experience in the designated clinical area, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a patient/family centred model of care.

Broad knowledge of BCCNM standards for nursing practice. Knowledge of hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care. Demonstrated ability in nursing practice related to designated patient group.

General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice, Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care. Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety. Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.

Ability to plan and implement plans of care in relation to patient/family priorities. Ability to utilize internal and community resources. Demonstrated ability to anticipate and respond to potential complications and care issues relevant to the designated patient group.

Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in discharge planning with team members. Ability to adjust to new or unexpected events. Ability to manage aggressive and suicidal behavior.

Demonstrated ability to engage in conflict resolution in situations involving patients, family, staff, and other members of the health care team. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to counsel and teach patients and their families based on their priorities.

Demonstrated skill in the use of medical equipment and supplies appropriate to the clinical area. Demonstrated skill in techniques appropriate to the clinical area. Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
