Job Description

Byrnes Accounting & Financial Pty Ltd provides taxation, accounting, business advisory, financial reporting and compliance services to individuals, businesses, trusts and self-managed superannuation funds. We also conduct annual audits for not-for-profit organisations and provide management accounting services to Aboriginal Health Services.

The Accountant (General) will deliver accounting, taxation and advisory services, manage a portfolio of clients and ensure compliance with Australian accounting, taxation and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare annual financial statements for companies, trusts, partnerships and sole traders.
  • Prepare management reports, cash-flow forecasts and financial projections.
  • Analyse financial performance, reconcile accounts and maintain accurate records.

Taxation

  • Prepare and lodge income tax returns, BAS, IAS and GST returns.
  • Provide taxation planning and compliance advice.
  • Liaise with the Australian Taxation Office regarding client matters.

Business Advisory

  • Assist clients with budgeting, forecasting and financial planning.
  • Analyse profitability and recommend improvements to financial management and operational efficiency.
  • Provide advice on business structures and financial decisions.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, taxation legislation and relevant corporate requirements.
  • Prepare ASIC and other statutory compliance documentation.
  • Maintain accurate client records and working papers.

Client Management

  • Manage a portfolio of business and individual clients.
  • Meet with clients to discuss financial performance, taxation and compliance obligations.
  • Maintain professional relationships and respond promptly to enquiries.
  • Use accounting systems including Xero, MYOB, Reckon and other cloud-based platforms.
  • Assist clients with bookkeeping systems and software implementation.
  • Review financial controls and recommend improvements.

Professional Duties

  • Maintain client confidentiality and high ethical standards.
  • Remain current with accounting, taxation and legislative changes.
  • Undertake professional development and guide junior staff where required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher qualification in Accounting or a closely related discipline.
  • Membership of IPA, CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, or willingness to obtain membership.

Experience

  • At least five years of relevant post-qualification accounting experience.
  • Experience preparing financial statements, taxation returns and compliance reports.
  • Knowledge of Australian accounting and taxation requirements is highly desirable.

Skills

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and numerical skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and cloud-accounting software skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple client files, priorities and deadlines.

Knowledge

The successful applicant should understand:

  • Australian Accounting Standards and taxation law.
  • GST, BAS, payroll and financial reporting requirements.
  • Budgeting, business advisory and corporate compliance.
  • Accounting and financial-management systems.

Physical Requirements
