Sustainability Analyst

Purpose Bureau

New South WalesFull-timeMid LevelOn-site

Job Description

About the Company

Purpose Bureau is a high-growth ESG data and technology business helping organisations better understand, measure, and manage sustainability-related risks and performance across their supply chains. We work at the intersection of data, research, and ESG, supporting clients with high-quality insights in a rapidly evolving space. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing business where you can learn from senior team members, build meaningful expertise, and develop your career in an area of increasing importance to businesses and supply chains.

About the Role

We're looking for an ESG Analyst with a sharp eye for detail, strong quality assurance instincts, and a genuine interest in sustainability. This role is ideal for someone with 1โ€“2 years of experience in a data analyst, data operations, or similar hands-on data role, who enjoys identifying inconsistencies, working through ambiguity, and improving data quality. Beyond technical accuracy, we need someone who takes ownership of problems rather than waiting to be told what to do โ€” someone who spots issues before they elevate, proposes fixes rather than just flagging faults, and treats process gaps as things to solve, not just work around.

You do not need to be an ESG expert from day one. What matters most is strong analytical ability, excellent attention to detail, comfort working with data, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the willingness to learn quickly in a fast-moving environment.

Responsibilities

  • Verify supplier data, including confirming legal entity matches, industry classifications, and corporate group structures using databases, research tools, and structured workflows.
  • Conduct first-pass QA review of emissions data, checking submissions against expected ranges and identifying anomalies such as unusual year-on-year movements, high or low intensity outliers, and significant variance from sector benchmarks.
  • Perform initial QA checks on ESG ratings outputs across climate and social risk, escalating anomalies or exceptions to senior team members for review and sign-off โ€” with a clear rationale and, where possible, a recommended resolution.
  • Cleanse, prepare, and standardise client-provided spend data for processing, including formatting, deduplication, and country alignment.
  • Coordinate regular data processing cycles and respond to ad hoc client requests in line with delivery timelines, flagging risks to those timelines early rather than after the fact.
  • Clearly document findings, data issues, and recommended next steps for review by senior team members.
  • Proactively identify recurring data issues, workflow inefficiencies, or process gaps and raise practical improvement ideas, not just symptoms.
  • Support the ongoing improvement of internal processes, workflows, and quality controls as the business continues to grow.

Qualifications

1โ€“2 years' experience in a data analyst, data operations, or similar hands-on data role.

Required Skills

  • Advanced Excel capability, including data manipulation, cleansing, and review.
  • Experience with Power Query, or a demonstrated ability to learn new tools quickly.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a strong track record of identifying data issues and inconsistencies.
  • Comfortable using technology and automation tools to support research, data verification, and quality review, while applying critical thinking and sound judgement to maintain output quality.
  • Strong problem-solving skills โ€” able to diagnose root causes, not just report symptoms, and recommend practical fixes.
  • Proactive mindset โ€” takes initiative to flag risks, surface improvement opportunities, and act ahead of issues rather than waiting for direction.
  • Able to work quickly, stay organised, and maintain accuracy under time pressure.
  • Comfortable making reasonable judgement calls where information is incomplete or unclear.
  • Strong written communication skills, especially in documenting findings and escalating issues clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new systems, workflows, and domain knowledge in a changing environment.
  • Reliable, proactive, and accountable in managing tasks through to completion.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with ESG, sustainability, or supply chain concepts.
  • Exposure to entity matching, data cleansing, or similar data quality-focused work.
  • Experience in QA processes, exception handling, or structured research workflows.

Pay range and compensation package

To be discussed during the interview process.
