The Role

As the Managing Director, Debt Capital Markets within Real Assets, you will provide strategic leadership across CPP Investments’ global infrastructure, energy & power, and real estate portfolio to support debt financing, optimize capital structures, and strengthen lender relationships. Working closely with investment teams, portfolio companies, strategic partners, and lenders, you will provide market insight, advise on complex financings, and help shape portfolio‑wide financing strategies and best practices.

The Team

Real Assets invests globally across infrastructure, energy & power, and real estate, managing approximately C$144 billion in assets under management. The department partners with leading businesses, management teams, and investment partners worldwide to create long‑term value through active ownership, disciplined investing, and thoughtful capital allocation.

This newly created role provides debt capital markets leadership across the global Real Assets portfolio. Working collaboratively with investment teams, Total Fund Management, Credit Investments, portfolio companies, fund managers, and lending partners, you will help develop financing strategies, strengthen lender relationships, and enhance portfolio‑wide oversight of credit and capital structures.

Accountabilities

  • Build and manage strategic relationships with lenders, fund managers, strategic partners, and internal stakeholders to support financing activities across the global Real Assets portfolio.
  • Provide debt capital markets insight and advise investment teams on financing strategies, capital structures, and debt execution for new investments and portfolio companies.
  • Monitor global credit markets and identify portfolio‑wide financing opportunities, emerging risks, and market trends across infrastructure, energy & power, and real estate.
  • Partner with investment teams, portfolio company management, and external financing partners to negotiate and execute material financing transactions and lending agreements.
  • Lead the development of financing best practices, standardized precedents, and consistent approaches across the Real Assets portfolio.
  • Enhance portfolio‑level reporting, monitoring, and governance for key credit metrics while supporting investment committee discussions and decision‑making.
  • Collaborate closely with Total Fund Management, Credit Investments, and other internal partners to strengthen financing strategies and portfolio oversight.

What You Bring

  • 15+ years of experience in debt capital markets with expertise in project and/or infrastructure finance gained through investment banking, principal investing, or a comparable environment.
  • Broad experience across global markets, including Canada, the United States, and Europe, with exposure to one or more real asset sectors such as infrastructure, energy & power, utilities, transportation, digital infrastructure, or real estate.
  • Demonstrated expertise in debt financing, capital structure optimization, credit analysis, and complex financing transactions.
  • Strong commercial judgement, analytical capabilities, and the ability to develop practical solutions to complex financing challenges.
  • Proven ability to build trusted relationships, influence stakeholders, and drive outcomes across diverse internal and external partners.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with experience engaging senior executives, investment professionals, and external counterparties.
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to balance strategic thinking and hands‑on execution while managing competing priorities.
