The role with us

The Senior Marketing Strategist is a senior strategic partner within the Strategy & Creative Excellence team, reporting to the Head of Strategy & Creative Excellence.

This role helps shape the thinking behind some of Telstra’s most important marketing and communications initiatives. Working across brand, commercial and customer priorities, you’ll develop insight-led marketing and communications strategies that create distinctive, effective and creatively excellent work.

You’ll partner closely with internal stakeholders and teams as well as agency partners, to ensure every brief, campaign and integrated program is strategically rigorous, creatively ambitious and designed to deliver measurable business impact.

You’ll also play an important role in embedding effectiveness thinking across our marketing practice, championing evidence-based decision making, strong strategic planning and continuous learning from campaign performance.

You will ideally have creative strategy experience, be tapped into the external world and help bring innovative and fresh thinking to the Telstra marketing team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop insight-led marketing and communications strategies that solve business and customer problems and inspire outstanding creative work.
  • Lead the business strategic thinking on integrated campaigns and initiatives, translating commercial objectives, customer insight and cultural understanding into clear strategic direction for our teams and agencies.
  • Develop high-quality briefs that give creative teams the clarity and inspiration to produce exceptional work.
  • Collaborate across Brand, Marketing, Media, Customer and Commercial teams to ensure marketing strategies align to broader business priorities.
  • Be very comfortable around creative work, able to nurture it, protect it and sell it in.
  • Authentically collaborate and build rapport with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure we maintain our compelling brand identity in the market, deliver a cohesive narrative and drive creative excellence in all our work.
  • Identify customer, market and cultural insights that uncover new opportunities for growth and competitive advantage.
  • Champion marketing effectiveness by embedding best practice planning, measurement and learning into briefs, campaigns and planning processes.
  • Challenge thinking constructively and raise the quality of strategic and creative output through thoughtful feedback, collaboration and coaching.
  • Contribute to the evolution of Telstra’s marketing capability by championing strategic excellence, creativity and a culture of continuous improvement.

About You

To be successful in the role, you'll bring skills and experience in:

  • Significant experience in strategic planning within a leading creative, brand or integrated agency, or an equivalent in-house strategy role – Senior strategist/Strategy Director
  • A proven ability to develop marketing and communications strategies that have delivered commercial and brand impact.
  • Excellent creative instincts, know how to nurture ideas and champion creative thinking.
  • Deep understanding of marketing effectiveness principles and how to connect creative excellence with measurable business outcomes.
  • Strong strategic thinking, with the ability to synthesise customer, commercial, behavioural and cultural insights into compelling strategic direction.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and agency partners to develop integrated marketing programs.
  • Excellent facilitation, storytelling and communication skills, with confidence influencing senior stakeholders.
  • A curiosity about culture, creativity and human behaviour, with a passion for raising the quality and impact of marketing.
  • Experience partnering with stakeholders to align priorities and deliver integrated marketing outcomes.
  • Ability to analyse data and translate customer and market insights into actionable marketing recommendations.
  • Experience planning, executing and optimising multi-channel marketing campaigns.
  • Strong commercial acumen.
  • Collaborative team player who contributes to agile ways of working and shared outcomes.
