Teacher - Primary

This is a 36 month fixed term, full‑time position commencing as soon as possible with possible extension and/or permanency.

Jigalong is an Aboriginal community located 170 kilometres east of Newman on the edge of The Great Sandy Desert. It is home to the Jigalong Remote Community School (RCS), a K‑12 school that is part of the Remote Teaching Service. The school is supported by a dedicated team of teachers, Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers, Education Assistants, a school officer, gardener, and cook.

Both the school and the community have excellent relations with the Martu community and offer a quiet and safe environment.

As part of a small school, teachers work closely with students and families, fostering a culturally safe and trauma‑informed learning environment. The school values flexibility, resilience, and the ability to adapt quickly to evolving situations.

Role Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher to work with our Primary students. This role involves teaching across the curriculum with a focus on English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) literacy and numeracy skills. Primary teachers deliver the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) program for explicit, systematic phonics instruction and use Learning Through Doing for an inquiry‑based approach to mathematics.

The role also supports the development of a two‑way Science curriculum, requiring willingness to collaborate with Martu community members and to organise and deliver on‑country learning experiences.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging lessons that meet learning outcomes for the curriculum areas.
• Implement UFLI phonics instruction and Learning Through Doing mathematics approaches.
• Integrate EAL/D strategies to improve literacy and numeracy for students.
• Work collaboratively with the community, families and wider Aboriginal community to enhance student outcomes.
• Maintain accurate and timely record‑keeping and reporting in line with departmental requirements.
• Participate in professional development activities and contribute to continuous improvement of the school.

Eligibility and Requirements

• Hold an eligible teacher qualification and registration.
• Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
• Apply for a WA Working with Children Check before starting.
• Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before starting.
