Job DescriptionYard Manager Currently recruiting for a Yard Manager to manage the day-to-day operations of a busy builders' merchant yard, overseeing logistics, transport, warehousing, stock control, and customer service to ensure the efficient movement and storage of construction materials. Led and developed a team of yard operatives while maintaining high standards of operational performance, health and safety, and customer satisfaction. Key Responsibilities Managed all daily yard operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely receipt, storage, loading, and dispatch of construction materials.
Led, supervised, and motivated a team of yard staff, allocating daily workloads, monitoring performance, and providing coaching, support, and training. Planned and managed staff rotas, holidays, absences, and break schedules to ensure adequate operational cover. Coordinated transport, customer deliveries, and collections, ensuring orders were prepared accurately and delivered on schedule.
Maintained accurate inventory through stock control, cycle counts, stock takes, and effective warehouse management. Worked closely with sales, purchasing, and management teams to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer service. Built and maintained strong relationships with trade and retail customers by providing professional support and resolving queries efficiently.
Maintained high standards of housekeeping, presentation, and organisation across the yard and warehouse. Ensured full compliance with Health & Safety legislation, company policies, and safe working practices. Identified and implemented operational improvements to increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve service levels.
Assisted with promotional events, trade days, stock takes, and other business activities as required. Liaised with senior management and departmental managers to improve operational performance and provide cross-functional support. Monitored departmental performance, ensuring operational targets, deadlines, and customer service standards were consistently achieved.
Key Requirements & Skills Proven experience managing a busy yard, warehouse, logistics, or distribution operation. Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to motivate, coach, and develop teams. Excellent knowledge of logistics, stock control, warehousing, and transport coordination.
Strong understanding of Health & Safety legislation and safe working practices. Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines. Strong customer service and relationship management skills.
Effective communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across departments. Commercial awareness with a proactive approach to improving operational efficiency. High level of attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
Computer literate with experience using stock management and warehouse systems. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of accuracy, safety, and customer service. Experience within the construction, builders' merchant, or building materials sector is highly desirable.
