Job summary
This full-time post is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious S pecialty Doctor to join our department in the provision of Obstetrics & Gynaecology services. There is room in the job plan for applicants to undertake their own clinics and to develop a sub-speciality interest such as urogynaecology, minimal access surgery, colposcopy, infertility or sexual health services.
This is a full-time position but candidates wishing to work part-time or job-share are encouraged to apply.
Main duties of the job
All duties of this post are located at St Mary's Hospital, Newport. The post holder will assist in the provision of a comprehensive service in obstetrics and gynaecology including:
- To participate in the resident on call
- To undertake operating and out-patient clinics as required.
- The professional supervision and management of junior medical and nursing staff as necessary.
- Undertake professional development and participate in audit, ensuring all clinical governance areas are met.
One supporting programmed activity per week (SPA= 4 hours) will be allocated for this.
- To update one's clinical and managerial knowledge as required by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. To attend a local annual 2-day maternity update course.

Job description
Job responsibilities
The provisional timetable represents a job plan consisting of 11.7 programmed activities (PAs) per week. The job plan is a prospective agreement that sets out the doctors duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of the registrars professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities.
It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition it will include personal objectives including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.
Study and professional leave will be granted at the discretion of the department and in accordance with Terms and Conditions, and the Trusts policies and procedures.
The Trust supports the requirements for CPD and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. Funds are allocated to each specialty doctor on an annual basis - currently £ 800 per annum.
The successful candidate will be expected to play their part in the postgraduate activities, teaching and clinical audit.
The post holder will be encouraged to register for continuing professional development (CPD) with the Royal College of Surgeons and the post holder will be expected to undertake activities necessary to fulfil CME/CPD requirements for annual certification and General Medical Council revalidation.
The Job Plan will be reviewed at 3 months and annually thereafter by the Clinical Director/Lead Clinician.
Programmed Activities in Job Plan:
Direct Clinical Care includes emergency duties (including emergency work carried out during or arising from on-call); operating sessions including pre-operative and post-operative care, ward rounds, multi-disciplinary meetings (MDT), outpatient activities, clinical diagnostic work, other patient treatment, travel between sites and administration - 10.2 PAs.
Supporting Professional Activities (continuing professional development CPD, medical education, formal teaching, audit, job planning, appraisal, research, clinical management and local clinical governance meetings) -1.5 SPAs.

Review:
The ongoing number of PAs and personal job plan objectives will be decided in negotiation with the Care Group Director or Lead Clinician and with the Associate Director of Operations at the three-monthly review of the job plan. At this stage any necessary adjustments will be made to reflect the actual hours worked. Job planning will be conducted annually thereafter

- MBBS or Equivalent
- MRCOG or Equivalent
- On the GMC specialist register
- Diploma in Family Planning or willing to undertake the training

- Evidence of achievements of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice.
- Shall have completed at least four years full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis) There should be evidence of achievement of ST1 competencies in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (or the equivalent) at the time of application and a likelihood of achieving ST2 competencies (or their equivalent) by the start date of this post.
- Wide range of general experience in obstetrics and gynaecology
- Knowledge of current trends in the specialty.
