Job Description

Job Overview Full‑time Band 6 Sister post within the Renal unit (Gate 8b). The role is based primarily at Gate 8b, a 32‑bedded unit providing renal, dialysis and transplantation care to the South West community. The Band 6 Sister will support other renal units within North Bristol Trust, gaining interdisciplinary working experience and participating in audits and quality meetings.

Main Responsibilities Lead daily unit management, ensuring safe, high‑quality patient care. Support the Senior Sister and participate in weekly quality meetings. Undertake audits and contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) input.

Handle difficult conversations and lead board rounds. Provide leadership and mentoring to junior nursing staff. Manage the unit’s clinical assessment, development and evaluation of specialist renal care programmes.

Take responsibility for day‑to‑day management in the absence of the unit manager. Education / Training / Qualifications – Essential Criteria NMC registration and current licence to practice. BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing.

Minimum 2 years experience at Band 5 level. Flap or equivalent learning and assessment qualification. Evidence of renal competencies, IV certificate and other relevant clinical skills.

Evidence of training and updating in renal nursing. Proof of management qualification studies and management experience. Education / Training / Qualifications – Desirable Criteria Post‑registration renal speciality course.

Level 7 study evidence. Work Experience – Essential Criteria Demonstrated management experience. Experience using hospital computer systems.

Datix / Radar management experience. Work Experience – Desirable Criteria Ability to problem‑solve technical and nursing haemodialysis issues. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities – Essential Criteria Understanding of patient safety, safeguarding and risk management.

Ability to prioritise and clinically lead within the nursing team. Ability to monitor standards of nursing care. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities – Desirable Criteria Advanced haemodialysis skills and problem‑solving.

Knowledge of workforce planning and service development. Understanding of delegation, supervision and performance management. Personal Qualities – Essential Criteria Clear, compassionate communication with patients and families.

Personal Qualities – Desirable Criteria Conflict resolution and team motivation.
