Senior Speech and Language Therapist
The Senior Speech and Language Therapist is responsible for providing a high-quality, evidence-based Speech and Language Therapy service to older adults residing within the residential care unit. The post holder will assess, diagnose and manage communication and swallowing disorders, supporting residents to achieve the highest possible quality of life while promoting safe, person-centred care.
The Senior SLT will provide clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team (MDT), contribute to service development, supervise junior staff and students where appropriate, and ensure compliance with professional standards and national clinical guidelines.
Responsibilities of Senior Speech and Language Therapist
- Deliver comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and management of communication, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders.
- Manage a specialist caseload of residents with complex clinical needs.
- Develop individualised intervention plans using evidence-based practice.
- Complete clinical swallowing assessments and determine appropriate recommendations.
- Participate in multidisciplinary decision-making regarding eating and drinking with acknowledged risk.
- Provide recommendations regarding communication supports and environmental modifications.
- Prescribe and advise on appropriate communication aids where indicated.
- Maintain accurate, timely and legally compliant clinical documentation.
- Attend MDT meetings, case conferences and family meetings.
- Contribute to discharge planning where appropriate.
- Provide specialist advice regarding communication and swallowing management.
- Provide clinical leadership within Speech and Language Therapy services.
- Support and supervise Basic Grade SLTs and therapy assistants where applicable.
- Participate in induction and mentoring of new staff.
- Supervise SLT students in accordance with university placement requirements.
Requirements of Senior Speech and Language Therapist
- Degree or MSc in Speech and Language Therapy.
- Registration with CORU as a Speech and Language Therapist.
- Minimum of three yearsβ postgraduate clinical experience, including significant experience working with adults.

- Clinical decision-making in complex cases.
- Experience providing staff education and training.
