BUSINESS ANALYST – EDI & TRANSACTION PROCESSING 6-Month Contract (June – December 2026) Department: Business Solutions Reports To: Senior Manager, Business Solutions Engagement Type: Contract (6 Months) – Recruitment Firm Placement Location: Hybrid – Ontario Position Overview We are seeking a Senior Business Analyst for a focused six-month engagement to document, validate, and rationalize the business rules that govern our electronic transaction processing environment. This role is centered on one core question: When an electronic transaction enters our system, what should happen next—and is it actually happening? Our operations depend on a complex set of business rules that drive enrollment decisions, account status changes, exception handling, rejection processing, validation logic, and downstream workflow activities.
While some of these rules are documented, many exist only as operational knowledge held by subject matter experts. The successful candidate will work closely with Operations, Development, Quality Assurance, Market Operations, Customer Care, and business stakeholders to uncover, document, validate, and improve the logic that governs transaction processing throughout the transaction lifecycle. The primary outcome of this engagement is a complete, maintainable, and validated repository of business rules, workflows, exception handling processes, and supporting requirements documentation that can be used by Operations, Development, and future project teams.
Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a senior Business Analyst who enjoys uncovering undocumented business logic, translating operational knowledge into structured rules, and validating that system behaviour aligns with business intent. They are comfortable facilitating workshops with operational stakeholders, challenging assumptions, documenting complex decision paths, performing root cause analysis, and working closely with development teams to create testable requirements and acceptance criteria. This individual is highly analytical, naturally curious, and capable of transforming complex operational processes into clear, structured, and maintainable documentation.
Scope of Work 1. Business Rules Discovery & Documentation Facilitate structured discovery sessions with operational teams and SMEs to uncover undocumented or informally managed business rules Document how the system is expected to respond to each category of inbound transaction, including accepted, rejected, pending, suspended, and exception scenarios Produce formal business rules using structured methodologies such as: Decision tables Rule libraries Functional specifications Requirements documentation Establish a maintainable and version-controlled business rules repository Identify conflicting, ambiguous, incomplete, or inconsistently applied rules and recommend remediation 2. Business Process & Workflow Mapping Map end-to-end transaction processing workflows from receipt through resolution Document current-state business processes and identify gaps between documented procedures and actual system behaviour Develop future-state process maps reflecting desired business outcomes and decision logic Document: Approval points Exception paths Escalation processes Timeout scenarios Manual intervention triggers Produce process documentation using BPMN, Visio, Lucidchart, or similar methodologies and tools 3.
System Response & Business Logic Analysis Analyze current system responses to various transaction types and compare against intended business rules Perform gap analysis between expected and actual system behaviour Work with development teams to define and document correct system responses Support creation of: Functional requirements Acceptance criteria Test scenarios User Acceptance Testing (UAT) requirements Ensure documented requirements are traceable, testable, and aligned with business objectives 4. Exception, Rejection & Resolution Logic Catalog all known exception and rejection scenarios encountered during transaction processing Define intended business responses for each exception type, including: Hold Escalation Auto-correction Closure Re-submission Identify recurring rejection patterns and root causes Distinguish systemic issues from isolated data-quality problems Recommend business rule improvements and process enhancements where current behaviour does not align with business intent 5. Stakeholder Engagement & Requirements Sign-Off Lead workshops and working sessions with Operations, Development, QA, Market Operations, and business stakeholders Facilitate requirements review and approval cycles Present findings, recommendations, and process gaps clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences Build consensus around business rule definitions and desired future-state behaviour Ensure all deliverables receive appropriate stakeholder review and sign-off Deliverables Expected by End of Contract The successful contractor will deliver: Comprehensive inventory of transaction-processing business rules Business rules repository and decision tables Current-state workflow and process documentation Future-state workflow recommendations Exception and rejection handling catalogue Gap analysis and findings report Functional requirements and acceptance criteria documentation Supporting data analysis findings Final knowledge-transfer and transition package Prioritized recommendations for future enhancements Qualifications Required 5+ years of Business Analysis experience within transaction processing, operations, systems integration, utilities, financial services, telecommunications, insurance, or similar environments Demonstrated expertise in: Business rules elicitation Requirements gathering Process mapping Gap analysis Root cause analysis Strong experience producing: Decision tables Rule libraries Functional specifications Business requirements documentation Proven ability to create current-state and future-state workflows with clear decision logic Experience working through full requirements lifecycles within SDLC and Agile environments Strong stakeholder facilitation and workshop leadership skills Excellent written communication and documentation skills Ability to analyze operational data and identify discrepancies between expected and actual outcomes Strongly Preferred Experience in regulated industries with structured transaction-processing lifecycles: Energy Utilities Financial Services Insurance Telecommunications Experience with EDI transaction processing and electronic data exchange environments Experience documenting transaction validation, enrollment processing, and exception management logic Experience translating business rules into testable system requirements Strong SQL skills for data validation and analysis Advanced Excel skills for operational analysis and reconciliation Experience supporting User Acceptance Testing (UAT) Nice to Have Experience with XML-based transaction processing and data exchange formats Familiarity with Ontario energy market processes Familiarity with LDC enrollment and transaction workflows Experience with utility market transactions and customer enrollment lifecycles Experience using: Power BI Power Automate Visio Lucidchart Jira Azure DevOps Confluence Why This Engagement?
