This Work Placement Experience Programme provides Participants with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, learning and training while on the programme. The programme is for jobseekers who are in receipt of qualifying social welfare payments and those transferring from a social welfare scheme or an ETB Training Allowance. Eligibility will be verified by the Department as part of the application process.

The role is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided. Participants will be eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection.

This optional module will fulfil accredited training requirements for the WPEP.

Key Responsibilities and Skills

  • Maintain operational standards consistent with shop operating procedures.
  • Handle customers in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of all sales and payments and ensure cash handling and security procedures are observed.
  • Maintain a safe environment for customers, volunteers and staff; report hazards to the Shop Manager or Area Manager.
  • Observe stock management procedures; maximise merchandising and window display opportunities.
  • Training in till/cash handling and credit card procedures, merchandising, window dressing, time management, customer care, communication skills, teamwork, adaptability and problem solving.

Professional Development

  • Formal Training: till/cash handling, credit card training, merchandising, window dressing, time management, customer care.
  • Informal Training: communication skills, teamwork, adaptability/problem solving.
