Remote | STEM Research & Technical Domain Expert — $45–$70/hour

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for PhD-level and experienced technical professionals across STEM disciplines to contribute subject-matter expertise to advanced research and problem-design projects.

This role focuses on creating challenging, domain-specific problems and high-quality technical materials that require deep subject knowledge, careful reasoning, and precise written communication. Opportunities are available across medicine and healthcare, statistics and data science, AI and machine learning research, computer science, game development, and mechanical or aerospace engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Domain-Specific Problem Design

• Develop challenging problems grounded in your primary technical or scientific discipline
• Create tasks that require meaningful subject-matter expertise and advanced reasoning
• Ensure problems are technically accurate, appropriately difficult, and clearly specified
• Design scenarios that reflect realistic academic, research, or professional applications
• Apply expert judgement when determining expected reasoning and solution quality

Technical Reasoning & Solutions

• Develop accurate and well-structured approaches to complex technical questions
• Explain specialised concepts clearly and logically
• Verify assumptions, calculations, methodologies, and conclusions
• Identify ambiguous, incomplete, or technically inconsistent problem formulations
• Maintain a high standard of scientific and technical rigour

STEM Research & Subject-Matter Expertise

• Contribute expertise in one or more relevant domains, including:
  • Medicine / Healthcare
  • Statistics & Data Science
  • AI / Machine Learning Research
  • Computer Science
  • Game Development
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Aerospace Engineering
• Apply advanced academic or industry knowledge to specialised assignments
• Evaluate technical material through the standards and methodologies of your field

Quality Review

• Review technical problems and associated materials for accuracy and completeness
• Identify factual, mathematical, methodological, or logical errors
• Assess whether assignments meaningfully test advanced domain knowledge
• Verify that expected outcomes are supported by the information provided
• Maintain consistency and attention to detail across project work

Technical Communication

• Produce clear, concise, and technically precise written material
• Explain complex concepts in a structured and understandable manner
• Communicate assumptions and reasoning effectively
• Translate specialised expertise into well-defined technical tasks
• Provide constructive and actionable written feedback where required

Ideal Profile

• PhD or other advanced degree, or equivalent substantial industry experience, in a relevant technical discipline
• Expertise in medicine/healthcare, statistics, data science, AI/ML research, computer science, game development, mechanical engineering, or aerospace engineering
• Strong command of advanced concepts and problem-solving methods within your specialist field
• High attention to detail
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to develop difficult, technically rigorous problems within your area of expertise
• Comfortable working independently on specialised research and evaluation assignments

Engagement Details

• Part-time independent contractor engagement
• Fully remote
• Applicants currently accepted from the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada
• Compensation: $45–$70/hour
• Flexible scheduling based on project requirements
• Screening includes a short interview and technical task of approximately 20–30 minutes
• Selected contributors may complete additional onboarding materials
• Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance
• Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
• H1-B and STEM OPT support is unavailable for this engagement
