We are seeking an experienced and engaging Freelance KS1, KS2, KS3, UK GCSE and A-Level English Teacher to deliver high-quality online lessons in English Language and/or English Literature.

The Role

The successful candidate will teach UK-based students preparing for GCSE, IGCSE, KS1, KS2, KS3, AS and A-Level examinations. You will provide structured curriculum instruction, examination preparation and personalised academic support based on each student’s examination board, current ability and learning goals.

This freelance opportunity is ideal for an accomplished English educator with excellent subject knowledge, a strong understanding of UK assessment requirements and the ability to develop students’ analytical, interpretive and academic writing skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, interactive and well-structured online English lessons for GCSE, IGCSE, KS1, KS2, KS3, AS and A-Level students.
  • Teach English Language, English Literature or both, according to your area of expertise.
  • Plan lessons in alignment with relevant UK examination-board specifications, including AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and Cambridge International.
  • Help students understand and analyse literary and non-literary texts with accuracy, depth and confidence.
  • Develop students’ reading comprehension, critical thinking, vocabulary and written communication.
  • Teach effective approaches to creative writing, persuasive writing, transactional writing and academic essays.
  • Help students construct clear arguments and use textual evidence, literary terminology and contextual knowledge effectively.
  • Prepare students for coursework, internal assessments, mock examinations and final examinations.
  • Explain assessment objectives, examination techniques, question structures and marking criteria clearly.
  • Review students’ essays, assignments and practice papers and provide detailed, constructive feedback.
  • Identify individual learning gaps and create targeted improvement plans.
  • Assign appropriate homework and monitor its completion and quality.
  • Maintain accurate lesson notes, attendance records and student progress updates.
  • Communicate professionally with students, parents and the Smavy Academy team.
  • Participate in teacher training, academic reviews and periodic parent–teacher meetings when required.
  • Maintain a safe, respectful and encouraging online learning environment.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English, English Literature, Education or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of the UK GCSE and/or A-Level English curriculum and assessment objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching GCSE, IGCSE, KS1, KS2, KS3, AS or A-Level English Language and/or English Literature.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English.
  • Strong knowledge of literary analysis, critical interpretation and academic writing.
  • Ability to assess student work accurately and provide specific, actionable feedback.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods and resources to different abilities and learning needs.
  • Confidence using online teaching platforms, digital whiteboards and shared learning resources.
  • Reliable computer, high-speed internet connection, clear audio and a suitable teaching environment.
  • Availability during UK-compatible teaching hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
  • Commitment to punctuality, professionalism and consistent student support.
  • Willingness to complete identity, qualification and background-verification checks.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Formal teaching qualification such as B.Ed., M.Ed., PGCE, QTS or an equivalent credential.
  • Experience teaching specifications from AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR or Cambridge International.
  • Experience teaching both English Language and English Literature.
  • Experience as an examiner, moderator, assessment specialist or examination-paper evaluator.
  • Proven success in helping students improve predicted grades or achieve strong examination results.
  • Experience delivering one-to-one online classes to international students.
  • Familiarity with safeguarding requirements when teaching children and young people online.
