Inherited Cardiac Conditions Nurse Specialist The closing date is 26 April 2026. This post provides an exciting opportunity for an appropriately trained nurse to become an integral part of the established South Yorkshire Regional Services ICC service. The Inherited Cardiac Conditions service (ICC) provides a specialist service for a diverse group of familial conditions that affect the heart and major blood vessels, divided into five main sub-specialist areas: Cardiomyopathies, Ion Channelopathies, Aortopathies, Neuromuscular conditions and Familial Hypercholesterolaemia.
The post holder will carry continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards of care. The post will provide specialist nursing care to newly referred patients and those under follow-up, including management of patients diagnosed with the condition and their relatives at risk. Clinical screening processes, coordination of investigations, interpretation of results and prevention of complications (MI, heart failure, arrhythmia, vessel dissections, sudden death) are fundamental to the role.
Main duties of the job Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential. The successful candidate will act as a source of expertise and knowledge for patients, relatives and health professionals, identifying individual needs. Provide support and information for patients with inherited cardiovascular conditions, advice, screening information and supportive counselling.
Manage nurse-led clinics and diverse caseloads autonomously, completing nurse-led procedures such as ajmaline provocation tests and providing feedback to the lead consultant cardiologist. Act as a resource for other health care professionals, collaborate with cardiologists, and liaise with specialties including Echocardiography, ECG, Neuromuscular services, Clinical Genetics, Surgeons, Coroners, Geneticists, Paediatric services. Facilitate transition of 13+ year olds to adult services and support ICC outreach service across DGH sites.
Qualifications Registered Nurse (Level 1) NMC Registered Non-Medical Prescribing Completed national practice assessor training or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998 Continuous Professional Development Masters degree or working towards (academic level 7) Specialist training relevant to role Advanced Health Assessment qualification (or willing to work towards) Relevant post-registration qualification Experience Extensive post-registration experience within cardiology/cardiothoracic Relevant experience at Band 6 level Experience of working collaboratively across professional and organisational boundaries Experience of caseload management Ability to demonstrate expert knowledge, training and experienceAudit and standard setting Level 3 Safeguarding Experience of working with ICC patients Further Training and Development Sound clinical knowledge and skills within the speciality Willing to undergo necessary training Work autonomously and make independent decisions Develop and drive forward innovative practice with a flexible approach to service provision Motivate colleagues to develop the service Undertake relevant training and education Participate in and initiate research Proven communication and interpersonal skills Excellent time management and organisational skills Flexible with working pattern and needs of the service Clinical role model and clinical resource/support Interpret 12 lead Electrocardiograms Expanded nursing roles e.g. venepuncture & cannulation Evidence of leadership skills Demonstrate teaching and development & support skills Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous convictions.
