An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Infection Prevention and Control Team (IPCT). We are looking for an enthusiastic, proactive, motivated and/or experienced infection prevention & control nurse to join our team. This role involves daily patient ward rounds, providing proactive advice to patients, staff and visitors, problem solving, undertaking audits, infection surveillance, outbreak management, teaching and supporting the implementation of local and national infection prevention and control policies.
The position requires travelling to other trust premises, so candidates must be able to get around the trust sites in a timely and efficient manner. Enthusiasm for ongoing professional self‑development and for developing others is essential. Responsibilities Support the IPCT in the development, implementation and evaluation of local and national infection prevention and control policies and initiatives.
Participate in decontamination, surveillance, outbreak investigation and clinical audit activities. Provide clinical expertise when patients are identified with healthcare‑acquired or communicable infections. Guide clinical areas to maintain biosecurity measures and ensure evidence‑based practice through rapid audit, feedback systems and educational tools.
Collect, communicate and report data to support surveillance and to compile accurate, legible records in line with professional and statutory regulation. Advise on management and investigation of incidents and outbreaks of infection, applying improvement methodologies to enhance quality and safety. Assist in the evaluation of decontamination processes, product purchasing and infection control audit programmes.
Represent the IPCT Specialist Nurse at meetings within the organisation and support the Infection Control Nursing Team with workload prioritisation and representation at internal groups. Provide specialist advice and education to clinical teams, fostering professional relationships and facilitating continuous quality improvement. Remain flexible with working hours in the unlikely event of a significant outbreak to ensure safe and effective management.
Qualifications Registered Nurse (RN) with current NMC registration. Degree or equivalent level of education or experience. Evidence of current professional development.
Teaching and assessing certificate. Certificate or diploma in Infection Prevention & Control. Experience Demonstrable interest and knowledge in infection prevention and control issues.
Experience of participation in clinical audit and research. Experience of involvement in quality improvement. Skills Interpersonal skills.
Ability to assess and assimilate information and adopt a problem‑solving approach to achieve change. Ability to work independently and in a small team with a range of staff across the organisation. Capacity to cope with unpredictable workload with frequent interruptions and work flexibly.
Ability to assess risks associated with occupational exposure and provide specialist guidance and signposting. Report writing and presentation skills. Computer literacy: ability to input and extract data from NHS computer systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Knowledge Knowledge of current guidance relating to infection prevention and control. Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality. Understanding of equality and diversity issues and their impact on patients, visitors and staff.
Knowledge of research and audit in specialty. Values Ability to demonstrate the organisational values and behaviours. Other Capability to work some unsocial hours, including weekends.
