About us
Milkon Steel is a Melbourne-based structural steel business delivering fabrication and installation across commercial projects. We're growing, and we've recently added a crane truck with a 28-metre reach and 7.6m tray to support our site delivery and lifting capability. We're looking for an experienced operator to run it.
About the role
You'll be the dedicated driver and operator of our crane truck โ a tandem-rear-axle rigid with a 7.6m tray and 28m crane reach โ responsible for the safe transport, loading, unloading and precision placement of structural steel and materials on our sites and at client locations. This is a hands-on role where your lifting judgement and care for the gear directly affect site safety and project timelines.
Key responsibilities
Operate the crane truck (28m reach) for loading, unloading and accurate placement of structural steel and fabricated components
Drive a 3-axle rigid crane truck (tandem rear, 7.6m tray) safely between the yard, fabrication facility and project sites
Conduct pre-start checks, daily inspections and basic maintenance; report defects promptly
Plan and execute lifts safely, including assessing loads, ground conditions and exclusion zones
Work in with riggers, doggers and site crews to coordinate lifts
Secure and restrain loads in line with load restraint requirements
Maintain compliance with all WHS, traffic and site safety requirements
What you'll need
Heavy Rigid (HR) truck licence (minimum) โ the truck is a 3-axle rigid with a tandem rear group
Manual licence (not auto-restricted) โ the truck is a manual
Vehicle Loading Crane high-risk work licence (CV) for a crane of this capacity
Construction Induction Card (White Card)
Proven experience operating a vehicle-loading / crane truck, ideally in steel, construction or heavy materials
Confidence handling and reversing a long-tray rigid (7.6m) on site and in tight access
Sound understanding of lift planning, load charts and load restraint
Strong safety focus and the ability to work independently and as part of a crew
Reliable, punctual and able to take care of company equipment
Dogging (DG) and/or Rigging tickets
Experience handling structural steel
HC or MC licence
