Local Department Head - Psychiatry, Mental Health and Substance Use Program - Burnaby Hospital

Job Summary Fraser Health is seeking to fill the Department Head of Psychiatry position which provides overall professional practice leadership and direction to the members of a professional medical discipline/department within the Burnaby Hospital. The successful candidate will have lead responsibility for the maintenance of medical and ethical standards of practice and will ensure activities of the Department are consistent with the FH MHSU program priorities and directions. The position reports and is accountable to the Regional Department Head (RDH) and, as a member of the Burnaby (BH) medical staff, the incumbent will work as a team player with colleagues and co-workers in identifying service delivery models and processes to ensure seamless integration of services within acute care, community care, and primary care while maintaining system sustainability.

Responsibilities Participate in the Multidisciplinary Healthcare Coordinating Committee for the facility. Participate in the Department of Psychiatry operations committee meeting. Act as the communication channel to and from the Regional Department to keep Members practicing within the facility informed regarding FHA, HAMAC, and Departmental objectives, policies and general activities and to ensure Regional Departments are aware of issues specific to the facility.

Ensure the requirements of programs operating within the facility are coordinated. Maintain regular communication with operational leaders and Physician Leads within the department of community mental health teams. Attend the MHSU regional meetings.

Monitor and optimize key mental health performance indicators. Oversee a program of quality monitoring. Ensure continuous adequate medical staffing in both hospital and community mental health team programs.

Review applications for privileging and make recommendations regarding the granting of privileges to physicians. Manage physician compensation budget, in collaboration with the program manager(s) for the Burnaby Hospital and community mental health teams. Promote health and wellness amongst Members.

Investigate complaints regarding care provided by Members within the Department at the Facility under the direction of the appropriate Regional Department Head(s). Encourage a healthy, respectful workplace. Review with the Regional Department Head the human resource requirements of the Regional Department practicing within the facility.

Contribute to the search and selection of applicants for vacancies in the Regional Department. Qualifications Current licensure with CPSBC and current CMPA coverage. FRCPC in Psychiatry or FRCPC eligibility.

Active Medical staff member of the Burnaby Hospital and the Fraser Health Authority Mental Health and Substance Use Program. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development. Other Information Closing date: June 12, 2026.
