Job Title: Lecturer in Primary Care Dentistry (Two post)

Reporting To: Accountable to Professor Albert Leung, Head of the School of Dentistry

Location: RCSI, Sandyford Dental Education Centre (DEC), other DECs as they are developed, RCSI St Stephen’s Green Campus and all other RCSI owned or commissioned teaching, research and clinical facilities.

Objectives of this post:

You will join the expanding School of Dentistry as a Lecturer in Primary Care Dentistry and play a key role in the delivery and continued development of the undergraduate dentistry programme (BDS), while contributing to clinical teaching, curriculum enhancement, research and scholarship, and the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

RCSI is seeking an enthusiastic and appropriately qualified registered dentist with a strong interest in teaching, clinical supervision and research.

Professor Albert Leung is Professor of Dentistry and the foundation Head of the School of Dentistry, whom the Postholder will be accountable to.

Specific Duties of the Roles:

Programme Delivery and Development:

RCSI School of Dentistry operates a community-based BDS curriculum, which aligns with the relevant dentistry regulatory requirements for undergraduate teaching in Ireland. The School of Dentistry also currently offers Level 10 Programmes (PhD and Professional Doctorates), and more academic programmes will continue to be developed in due course.

• You will contribute to the delivery, implementation and ongoing enhancement of undergraduate and postgraduate education in Primary Care Dentistry, drawing on your clinical expertise and educational interests.
• You will contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching, clinical education, research and scholarship in Primary Care Dentistry, working collaboratively to support the School's educational mission.
• You will be working collaboratively with the team to contribute to and participate in the continuous development and delivery of the School’s level 8 (and where appropriate level 9 and level 10 as well, including academic supervision) educational programme.
• You will contribute to the development and enhancement of the School of Dentistry Curricula, ensuring that the applications to clinical practice contents are current, relevant, and aligned with advancements in the practice of dentistry.

You will work collaboratively with colleagues to support the delivery, implementation and continuous enhancement of the School's academic programmes, including:

• Contribute to the implementation and continuous enhancement of the undergraduate curriculum.
• Support curriculum planning, assessment and academic quality processes.
• Contribute to module and year leadership responsibilities as appropriate.
• Support curriculum innovation, including simulation, enquiry-based learning and technology-enhanced education.
• Contribute to accreditation activities and continuous quality improvement.
• Work collaboratively with academic and professional service colleagues to support effective programme delivery.
• Contribute to the development of School policies and procedures where appropriate.

Teaching

• Teaching in all aspects of dental education, with an emphasis on primary care dentistry, academic and curriculum development and support, mentoring students, conducting research as appropriate, and collaborating with industry and the academic community.
• Prepare and lead the delivery of teaching to students across the dentistry programmes. Ensure teaching, assessment and student support are delivered in accordance with School and University academic policies and quality standards.
• Integrate innovative teaching methods, technology, and research findings into the curriculum of the dentistry programmes to enhance students’ learning experience, in accordance with the School of Dentistry teaching and assessment strategies.
• Provide academic guidance and support to students, contributing to an excellent student learning experience.
• In time, the School of Dentistry shall be developing NFQ levels 9 and 10 programmes. As a Lecturer, you will be actively contributing to this drive in dental education and primary care dentistry, from curriculum design, assessment planning, facilities procurements, organisation of clinical and other pedagogic materials and capacity building in teaching, service provision and the relevant research.

Clinical Teaching and Service Provision

• To be actively involved in Clinical Activity, and to lead and co-ordinate where appropriate, including all aspects of primary care dentistry in any of the Dental Education Centres (including clinics) or other relevant facilities where RCSI operates or uses, including student supervision, assessments and service provision as necessary.
• To conduct clinical research where appropriate as part of the research output for this post.
• Where appropriate, to co-ordinate and lead the integration, and the delivery of dental education particularly in relation to clinical and service provision

Research

• To pursue sustained high quality research activities, aligned with the School priorities, through original research and scholarship, including other research related contributions such as publications in high impact journals, conference presentations, consultancy projects/advice in dentistry, particularly in the field of dental education and primary care dentistry.
• Supervise and support undergraduate and postgraduate research, as appropriate.
• Engage in knowledge exchange and scholarly activities that enhance clinical practice, education and the reputation of the School.

Support and Collaborations

• Collaborate with dental clinicians and other healthcare professionals to integrate aspects of basic sciences and clinical applications of these sciences in relation to the practice of dentistry.
• Work closely with inter-disciplinary healthcare teams to address Oral Health Challenges and contribute to the development of evidence-based clinical care strategies.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues across the School, RCSI and external partners to support curriculum delivery, educational innovation and the student experience.

Continuing Development

• Undergo programmes of training and development as may be required.
• Always represent the best interests of the School of Dentistry and RCSI.
• Stay current with advancements in clinical dentistry, dental education and related fields through continuing professional development activities.
• Participate in national and international conferences to share research insights, collaborate with peers, and stay abreast of the latest developments in the field.

Administration

• Contribute to School and University committees and academic governance as required.
• Support the operational delivery and continuous improvement of the programme.
• Contribute to the induction and mentoring of colleagues as appropriate.

Will have demonstrable evidence of the below:

• A PhD or comparable level 10 training (e.g. DChDent, FFDRCSI) in an area relevant to dentistry or dental education.
• Full registration with the Dental Council of Ireland, or eligibility for registration.
• Completion of appropriate postgraduate clinical training in the relevant discipline.
• Experience of teaching and assessment in undergraduate and/or postgraduate dental or health professions education.
• A commitment to excellence in teaching, clinical supervision and student support.
• An active interest in research and scholarship, with evidence of research outputs appropriate to career stage.
• Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary academic team.
• A commitment to innovation, continuous professional development and contributing to the ongoing development of the School.
• Fellowship or Membership of an appropriate Royal College.
• Qualification in teaching and learning in higher education.
