What Youll Be Doing (position summary):The Director, Indirect Tax (India) is responsible for leading all indirect tax matters for CIBC India. This includes end-to-end management of GST compliance, advisory for business transactions, audits and litigation support, and implementation of regulatory changes. The role ensures full adherence to Indian indirect tax laws and acts as the primary contact for indirect tax in India, collaborating closely with global tax teams, external advisors, and Indian tax authorities.

How Youll Succeed (responsibilities):

  • Oversee all aspects of the outsourced indirect tax compliance arrangement for CIBC India, including accurate and timely filing of all GST returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9/9C, etc.), payment of liabilities, reconciliations, and documentation.
  • Manage GST input tax credit reconciliations (GSTR-2A/2B), address mismatches, and ensure vendor compliance to avoid ITC reversals.
  • Develop and execute a plan to transition the compliance functions in-house over-time, ensuring a smooth and effective handover of responsibilities.
  • Provide expert indirect tax advisory support to business units on transactions, contracts, cross-border activities, and new initiatives, including place of supply, reverse charge, and e-invoicing implications.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in indirect tax legislation, rules, notifications, and judicial pronouncements; assess business impact and communicate updates to stakeholders.
  • Implement and ensure compliance with e-invoicing and e-way bill requirements.
  • Manage GST audits, departmental audits, anti-evasion proceedings, and investigations, including preparation of responses, coordination with external advisors, and representation before authorities.
  • Handle GST refund applications for exports, input tax credits, and other incentives.
  • Oversee litigation management, including draft replies to notices, appeals, and appearing before tax authorities and tribunals as required.
  • Ensure accurate indirect tax accounting, reporting, and documentation in accordance with company policies and local regulations.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of tax technology solutions and process improvements for indirect tax (e.g., ERP, GST compliance tools), including advise on system configurations, updates and participate in user acceptance testing as related to indirect tax.
  • Develop and deliver training and guidance to non-tax staff to improve understanding of indirect tax obligations and processes.
  • Partner with global tax teams to ensure alignment of tax strategies and compliance efforts
  • Provide indirect tax support for contract reviews, vendor onboarding, and ensuring external vendors meet CIBC Indias indirect tax requirements.
  • Oversee non-STPI filings as required.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end indirect tax reporting and provision processes.
  • Maintain robust internal controls and governance frameworks to mitigate tax risks and ensure compliance.
  • Support the development and implementation of internal tax policies and procedures.
  • Maintain strong relationships with Indian tax authorities and represent CIBC India in relevant forums.

Experience: 7 years of experience

Who You Are (skills/qualifications):

Must Have Skills:

  • Chartered Accountant (CA) or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant indirect tax experience, preferably with a multinational corporation or Big 4 accounting firm.
  • In-depth and current technical knowledge of Indian GST law, rules, e-invoicing, e-way bill, and other indirect tax regulations; exposure to international VAT/GST is an asset.
  • Proven experience managing GST audits, departmental proceedings, and indirect tax litigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and implement regulatory changes, advance rulings, and judicial pronouncements.
  • Experience with GST portal filings, reconciliations, refund applications, and compliance automation tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Experience with ERP systems and tax technology platforms preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to collaborate across functions and geographies.
