Job Description

Baker

Schmaltz & Vinegar is a growing, woman-owned catering company with a deep love for seasonal comfort food, Jewish baking traditions, and feeding people really, really well. From rich, chocolate-swirled babka and flaky rugelach to savory foods of all varieties, we take classic comfort foods and elevate them for events, farmers markets, and catering across the city and suburbs.

We're expanding our baking program, and we're looking for a passionate, detail-oriented Baker to join our small, dynamic kitchen team. If you love rolling dough, tweaking recipes, and taking pride in every golden crust (and making lots of small cookies), you'll fit right in.

What You'll Do

  • Master the Classics: Bake our signature Jewish pastries and savories (babka, rugelach, knishes, challah, mandelbrot, and seasonal treats) to consistent, high-quality standards.
  • Help Us Grow: Collaborate on developing new recipes, expanding our catering menu, and scaling up production as our baking program grows.
  • Prep & Production: Handle dough preparation, shaping, filling, proofing, and baking on schedule for catering orders and events.
  • Kitchen Ownership: Maintain a clean, organized, and food-safe workstation (ServSafe standards), managing inventory and ingredient prep like a pro. Please note: we work out of a shared commercial kitchen so adhering to the rules of the kitchen is very important.

Who You Are

  • Experienced or Deeply Enthusiastic: You have 1+ years of baking experience OR a formal pastry/baking background.
  • Respect for the Craft: You understand (or are eager to master) traditional Jewish baking techniques and flavors and want to elevate with contemporary flavors and techniques.
  • Detail-Oriented & Efficient: You work efficiently with speed, accuracy, and care. This is a very independent position so attention to detail is vital.
  • Team Player with Independent Drive: You thrive in a collaborative, small-team environment where everyone wears a few hats, but you can also put on your headphones and knock out a solo prep list with focus.
  • Reliable: You understand kitchen timing, take pride in showing up on time, and can physically handle the shift (standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 lbs of flour).

Why Work With Us?

  • Growth Potential: We're actively building out our bakery arm. As we grow, your role, creative input, and responsibilities can grow with us. There are opportunities for partnerships or profit sharing for the right person.
  • Supportive Culture: Work directly with a hands-on owner in an inclusive, supportive, and empowering kitchen environment.
  • Competitive Pay: Depending on experience.
  • Perks: Flexible scheduling, a hands on experience to learn the world of small businesses, lots of creative freedom, the opportunity to really work on something from the ground up.
