Your new company This is an opportunity for an experienced Technical Accounting and Financial Reporting Specialist to join a local government organisation on a temporary contract of up to 12 months. Working within a specialist finance team, you will provide expert technical accounting and financial reporting advice, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, taxation legislation, and organisational policy. This role offers the opportunity to influence strategic financial outcomes, partner with senior stakeholders, and contribute to continuous improvement across a complex and dynamic environment.

Your new role

As the Technical Accounting and Financial Reporting Specialist, you will play a key role in delivering expert accounting, taxation, and statutory reporting services across the organisation.

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing expert technical accounting and financial reporting support, ensuring compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, taxation legislation, and organisational policies.
  • Delivering specialist advice on taxation and technical accounting matters, including the interpretation and application of accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Overseeing taxation compliance activities and returns, providing expert guidance on GST, FBT, Payroll Tax, and National Competition Policy (NCP) requirements.
  • Supporting the preparation and coordination of statutory and consolidated financial statements, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance.
  • Preparing reports, presentations, and submissions for audit committees and key stakeholders.
  • Overseeing the delivery of technical accounting training and guidance across the organisation.
  • Collaborating with auditors, regulators, and internal stakeholders to ensure financial reporting obligations are met.
  • Monitoring and implementing changes to accounting standards, taxation legislation, and financial regulations, providing proactive advice on emerging impacts.
  • Partnering with business units to resolve complex accounting, taxation, and financial reporting matters.
  • Driving continuous improvement across financial reporting processes, systems, and internal controls.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Extensive experience in technical accounting, taxation, and statutory financial reporting within a large and complex organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing financial statements and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Proven ability to provide trusted advice to senior leaders and influence key stakeholders.
  • CPA or CA qualification and a degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline, and a strong knowledge of Australian Accounting standards.
  • Experience developing and implementing financial reporting frameworks, policies, and governance control.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial matters and provide practical solutions.
