Position Overview
Reporting to the Director/Manager, the Mechanical Engineer plans, designs, installs, commissions and improves mechanical plant and equipment for Sam Mills Pty Ltd's milling and manufacturing operations. The role carries out preventive and corrective maintenance, investigates equipment faults and implements engineering improvements, with a strong focus on workplace health and safety, food-safety requirements, plant reliability and production efficiency. The Mechanical Engineer plays a key role in supporting efficient milling and packing operations, minimising downtime, and contributing to overall team performance and operational excellence.

Task & responsibilities
- Mechanical Design & Documentation: Design and review machinery, components and plant layouts using CAD, engineering calculations and applicable standards. Prepare drawings, specifications, bills of materials and technical reports
- Flour-Milling Plant Engineering & Reliability: Support roller mills, plansifters, purifiers, grain-cleaning equipment, conveyors, pneumatic systems, dust extraction, compressors, silos and packing machinery. Inspect equipment condition, analyse failures and implement design, operating or maintenance changes to improve reliability, product flow and asset life.
- Installation & Commissioning: Plan and supervise installation, alignment, testing and commissioning of machinery, conveyors, pumps and related systems. Support maintenance teams and verify work against design, quality and safety requirements.
- Engineering Projects & Procurement: Define scope, schedules, budgets and resources for equipment upgrades and capital works. Evaluate quotations and coordinate suppliers, fabricators and contractors.
- Safety, Compliance & Risk Management: Conduct risk assessments and ensure guarding and safe design comply with WHS and relevant Australian Standards. Support site quality, food-safety and environmental requirements.
- Continuous Improvement & Engineering Records: Use root-cause analysis and operating data to improve efficiency, throughput and maintainability. Maintain drawings, manuals, asset data and change-control records, and provide technical training as required.
Essential Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design, materials, manufacturing methods, rotating equipment, conveyors, hydraulics and pneumatics.
- Proficiency in CAD and preparation and interpretation of engineering drawings, calculations and specifications.
- Demonstrated mechanical fault-finding, root-cause analysis, reliability and maintenance-planning skills.
- Ability to deliver engineering projects and coordinate suppliers and contractors.
- Clear written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical personnel.
- Sound knowledge of WHS, safe design, risk management, Australian Standards and environmental requirements.
Role Requirements
- Availability to work full-time hours in accordance with business needs.
- Some local travel may be required as per the business requirements.
- This position is open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and holders of valid work visas.
- Occasional overtime or work outside normal hours during shutdowns, breakdowns or commissioning by mutual agreement.
- The role combines office work with inspections in operational plant areas, including noise, dust, stairs and platforms.
- Required PPE includes steel-cap boots, high-visibility clothing, and eye and hearing protection.
- Site hygiene, food-safety, lockout/tagout, WHS and environmental procedures must be followed.
Qualification & Experience
- Bachelor degree or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering, or recognised equivalent.
- Minimum 1 Year of experience in manufacturing, milling or an industrial plant environment.
- Proficiency with CAD and standard engineering, project and maintenance documentation systems.
- Full, unrestricted work rights in Australia.
- Working knowledge of WHS and environmental standards.
