Reporting to the Executive Director - Finance, the Director, Financial Reporting & General Accounting at Assisted Living Alberta provides strategic leadership and comprehensive oversight for the organizationâs financial reporting, accounting operations, and compliance functions in support of ALAâs mandate and service delivery model. The role is accountable for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information to support executive decisionâmaking, provincial reporting requirements, and organizational accountability. This is a new position within the Finance team and will be responsible for establishing a robust, effective, and customerâfocused team.
You will build and foster a strong relationship with Health Shared Services finance teams as well as peers within other health organizations and corporations.
The Director creates financial reporting frameworks and accounting practices aligned with PSAS, government requirements, and applicable legislation. They lead the preparation and analysis of internal and external financial reporting, providing clear interpretation of financial results, identifying risks, and delivering actionable insights to leadership. The role has accountability for coordinated and efficient periodâend and yearâend processes and ensures adherence to established timelines, strengthens financial controls, and drives continuous improvement to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and audit readiness.
They also lead the preparation of the organizationâs annual financial statements and documentation in alignment with public sector requirements. In partnership with Health Shared Services, the Director provides leadership and oversight of general accounting functions, including general ledger management, revenue recognition, reconciliations, and the integrity of financial data. The role ensures strong governance over financial systems and data and leads the development and ongoing refinement of accounting policies, procedures, and internal control frameworks.
The Director serves as the primary liaison for internal and external audit activities, including coordination with the Office of the Auditor General and external auditors. They ensure audit readiness, facilitate timely information sharing, support resolution of audit findings, and reinforce a culture of accountability, compliance, and continuous improvement across the organization. The Director provides direction, mentorship, and guidance to a team of finance professionals, fostering a highâperforming, collaborative environment, supporting staff development, succession planning, and building capacity within the team to meet the evolving needs of ALA.
Required Qualifications
- A postgraduate or masterâs degree in Accounting, Business, Mathematics, Economics, or a related discipline. The candidate must hold a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
Additional Required Qualifications
- A minimum of 7 yearsâ experience in an accounting, financial planning, or financial advisory role, including at least 3 years at a leadership level.

- Experience working with large financial information systems.
- Experience in an organization of similar size and complexity.
- Experience leading fullâcycle accounting up to and including financial statement preparation and yearâend reporting.
- Experience working with senior organizational leadership and presenting information at a board level.
