Job Description
The Salvation Army distributes goods and collection of donated material to support the organization’s mission. The role focuses on safe, timely delivery and proper handling of food, toys, and other supplies while maintaining compliance with transportation and safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain vehicles, including 3‑ton and 5‑ton commercial trucks, cube vans, and panel vans.
- Complete daily vehicle circle checks and ongoing inspections for defects, fuel, and fluid levels.
- Maintain and submit a daily CVOR log in accordance with regulation.
- Load, load/unload, and drive vehicles in accordance with Ministry of Transportation rules.
- Ensure a clean driver’s abstract and record of driving, reporting any changes or infractions to the supervisor.
- Display a presentable appearance with visible Salvation Army logo whenever in public view.
- Maintain a friendly, cooperative demeanor in line with Salvation Army standards.
- Operate a forklift/hand cart as required to move food, toys, and other items within the distribution centre.
- Build or assist in building skids for delivery and accurately count delivered products.
- Prepare and submit required paperwork timely and maintain a clean, safe work environment at vehicle, warehouse, and yard locations.
- Communicate daily service comments from ministry units, suppliers, or other contacts.
- Adhere to all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and provincial health and safety legislation.
- Work within compliance of WSIB, MOL, TSA, and other applicable requirements.
- Report any infractions or problems in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Assist in ensuring new employees and volunteers are trained on emergency procedures.
- Wear appropriate safety equipment as required.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned, including routine customer and donor interactions.
- Support and train new drivers as needed, providing guidance and instruction.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 1 year of safe driving experience.
- Valid full driver’s license for the province and a current driver’s abstract acceptable to the Salvation Army.
- Forklift operator’s certificate may be required.
- Strong navigation skills.
- Demonstrated safe driving practices and a strong sense of integrity and confidentiality.
- Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent organizational, prioritizing, and time‑management skills.
- Self‑motivated, disciplined, and flexible with a professional service‑oriented approach.
- Willingness to undergo screening and background checks.
- Knowledge of and adherence to the Salvation Army Code of Ethics.
Employment Details
- Full‑time position potentially requiring work outside regular business hours, alternate locations, or short‑term travel.
- Exposure to various temperatures and or outdoor conditions; may involve lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Target salary range: $21.28–$26.60 per hour, up to $31.92 per hour, based on experience, skills, and internal equity.
