Task & responsibilities
- Safely operate and manoeuvre heavy vehicles within loading docks, customer premises, warehouses, delivery sites, and other restricted-access or high-traffic environments to support the efficient loading and unloading of goods.
- Load and unload freight using appropriate equipment and machinery, including tailgate lifters, pallet jacks, tipping systems, and forklifts (where appropriately licensed), ensuring all tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
- Comply with all workplace health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures during loading and unloading activities, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe manual handling techniques, and adherence to site-specific safety requirements.
- Conduct routine pre-start, in-transit, and post-trip vehicle inspections and operational checks to ensure vehicles remain safe, roadworthy, and compliant with company policies and relevant transport legislation.
- Assess and verify load weights to ensure compliance with legal mass limits and axle load requirements, while ensuring loads are evenly distributed to maintain vehicle stability and safe operation.
- Secure, stack, and protect freight using appropriate load restraint equipment, including straps, chains, restraints, and tarpaulins, to minimise the risk of movement, damage, or loss during transportation.
- Review and verify transport documentation, manifests, delivery schedules, and load records to ensure freight details, quantities, destinations, and customer instructions are accurate before commencing deliveries.
- Inspect goods at collection and delivery points to identify any visible damage, shortages, or discrepancies, and promptly report any issues in accordance with company procedures.
- Obtain customer acknowledgements, signatures, and proof of delivery upon completion of deliveries, ensuring all documentation is accurate, complete, and submitted in a timely manner.
- Maintain clear and effective communication with dispatch personnel, supervisors, and customers regarding delivery progress, scheduling updates, delays, and any operational issues throughout transport activities.
Qualification & experience
- Hold a current and valid Australian Heavy Vehicle Licence (HR, HC, or MC).
- A Certificate II in Driving Operations or equivalent practical experience in heavy vehicle operations is desirable.
- Have a minimum of 1β2 years of demonstrated experience operating heavy vehicles or trucks.
- Sound understanding of transport legislation, road safety requirements, and regulatory compliance standards.
- Ability to work independently while ensuring the timely and efficient completion of deliveries and transport schedules.
- Physically fit and capable of undertaking loading, unloading, and other manual handling tasks associated with the role.
- Effective verbal communication skills, with a professional, dependable, and customer-focused approach to work.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety, safe driving practices, and compliance with company policies and procedures.
