Staff Nurse - Ward 4A Closing date: 29 April 2026 We are looking for an enthusiastic, ambitious and motivated individual to join our team as staff nurse. Ward 4A is a surgical ward specialising in Urology and General Surgery. Assisting in the delivery of patient‑centred and clinically effective care as part of a dynamic team.
You should be caring, compassionate, well organised with a positive attitude towards change and flexibility. We offer full training and preceptorship periods for newly qualified nursing staff. Our Services: Acute Care – Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all sites. Primary Care – Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.
Community Services – Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital allows patients needing acute hospital beds to continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
Specialist Regional Services – We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales. Support a dynamic multidisciplinary team; maintain a caring, compassionate, well‑organised approach.

Person Specification Qualifications 1st Level Registered Nurse (degree/diploma) Current NMC Registration Evidence of continuing professional development Knowledge Knowledge of NMC professional standards for practice within the Code Experience in a clinical environment Understanding of NMC revalidation requirements Experience working within a multi‑disciplinary team Understanding of national, regional and local NHS issues Experience providing and receiving complex, sensitive information Skills Excellent communication skills with the ability to network and build relationships at all levels Effective prioritisation and coordination of own workload Ability to de‑escalate complex situations Effective written, verbal and non‑verbal communication with patients, relatives, carers and all members of the team Awareness of confidentiality at all times Computer literacy, e.g. experience with electronic patient record systems Other Frequent moderate effort for several short periods (e.g. manual handling of patients and equipment) Frequent concentration required for drug calculation and administration Dealing with frequent interruptions and competing demands Ability to work within highly distressing or emotional circumstances (e.g. end‑of‑life care) Ability to communicate distressing information in a challenging environment Able to carry out direct clinical care as required on ward or department Potential exposure to blood or body fluids Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
