What Youll Be Doing (position summary):
The Sr. Software Development Engineer (SDE) is responsible for owning the complete software development lifecycle for ASG Technologies payment processing systems. This role is critical in driving technical excellence, delivering innovative solutions, and ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of payment infrastructure.
The incumbent will collaborate with cross-functional teams, set technical standards, and mentor junior engineers to support the organizations strategic objectives.

How Youll Succeed (responsibilities):
- Lead technical design and detailed technical planning for assigned features and services, producing design documents and driving alignment with senior engineers and tech leads.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code across the full stack, with a strong emphasis on backend services and payment processing workflows; set an example of code quality for the team.
- Implement and maintain comprehensive testing strategies unit, integration, and end-to-end for services you own; champion code quality through rigorous and constructive code reviews.
- Own CI/CD pipelines and deployment strategies for assigned services; take accountability for production monitoring, incident response, and on-call coverage.
- Create and maintain high-quality technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and operational runbooks for systems and features you own.
- Actively contribute to technical discussions and design reviews; provide well-reasoned input on architectural decisions within the Payment Solutions team.
- Identify and propose improvements to engineering processes, tooling, and practices within the team; drive adoption of improvements within your area of ownership.
- Uphold and contribute to the team's engineering standards; participate in defining best practices in collaboration with senior engineers and tech leads.
- Proactively identify technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and reliability risks within your domain and propose solutions.
- Build and maintain secure, PCI-compliant payment processing features with a deep understanding of correctness, reliability, and regulatory requirements.
- Own the implementation of transaction monitoring capabilities and contribute to fraud detection mechanisms.
- Optimize payment flows for performance, resilience, and user experience; debug and resolve complex issues in distributed payment systems.
- Lead integrations with third-party payment gateways, processors, and financial institutions; serve as a point of expertise for integration-related decisions on your team.
- Apply working knowledge of payment industry standards (PCI-DSS, PSD2) in day-to-day development decisions.
- Integrate AI/ML capabilities (fraud detection, anomaly detection, predictive analytics) into payment solutions; evaluate fit, trade-offs, and production readiness of AI components.
- Leverage LLMs and AI development frameworks to improve team productivity, code quality, and automated testing workflows.
- Evaluate AI-powered tools for applicability to team workflows; help the team adopt high-value tools effectively.
- Stay current with AI/ML trends in the payments and financial technology space; bring informed perspectives to team discussions.
- Provide regular mentorship to SDE1 (L5) engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, and technical guidance; actively invest in their growth.
- Collaborate with Product Management to refine requirements, clarify scope, and ensure technical feasibility of solutions.
- Work closely with QA and DevOps teams to ensure end-to-end quality, reliable deployments, and effective monitoring of payment systems.
- Share knowledge across the engineering team; contribute to a culture of learning and technical excellence.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
- Partner with senior engineers and tech leads (SDE3/L7+) on technical design and architectural alignment; receive guidance on platform-level decisions.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for Product Management in requirements definition and delivery planning for your workstreams.
- Work closely with QA Engineers to define test plans, review test coverage, and ensure quality gates are met before production.
- Collaborate with DevOps/Platform teams on deployment pipelines, infrastructure, and observability tooling.
- Engage with external vendors and third-party payment processors for integration design, troubleshooting, and support.
- Mentor and support SDE1 engineers within the team through coaching, pairing, and constructive code reviews.

Who You Are (skills/qualifications):
Must Have Skills:
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, with at least 2 years in backend or full-stack development.
- Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Java, C#, Go, or similar); proven ability to adapt to new technologies and contexts.
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement scalable, distributed systems; solid understanding of microservices architecture and its trade-offs.
- Proven ownership of the complete software development lifecycle from requirements through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
- Strong understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL solutions (MongoDB, Redis); proficiency in SQL, query optimization, and data modeling.
- Experience designing and implementing production-grade RESTful APIs; familiarity with GraphQL is an asset.
- Expert-level Git proficiency; experience leading collaborative development workflows including pull request reviews, branching strategies, and release management.
- Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, GCP); ability to make informed decisions about cloud services and architecture.
- Experience owning CI/CD pipelines and containerized deployments (Docker); working knowledge of infrastructure as code concepts.
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills across complex, distributed systems; ability to diagnose and resolve production issues under pressure.
- Solid application of software design patterns and architectural principles (SOLID, DRY, KISS, event-driven design).
- Performance optimization experience profiling, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing measurable improvements.
- Security-first development mindset with practical knowledge of common vulnerability classes and secure coding practices.
- Comfortable integrating AI/ML capabilities into production systems; able to critically evaluate AI use cases for fit, reliability, and risk in a payment context.
Good to have Skills:
- Experience with payment processing systems, foreign exchange, or financial services domain; knowledge of transaction lifecycle, settlement, or reconciliation workflows.
- Working knowledge of PCI-DSS, PSD2, or other payment/financial industry compliance standards.
- Experience with message queuing and event streaming systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- Familiarity with container orchestration (Kubernetes) and advanced cloud-native patterns.
- Experience building or operationalizing fraud detection or risk-scoring systems using ML models.
- Hands-on experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS Bedrock) or AI-assisted developer tooling in a professional context.
- Experience with vector databases or embedding-based search (pgvector, Pinecone, Weaviate).
