The team is supported by innovative technology solutions and strong partnerships with Microsoft and Google to deliver award-winning results. The London Market tech team is a modern, agile technology department that collaborates closely with colleagues across the company to deliver true business value in an agile fashion.

We are a group of engineers (Software, Data, Quality, Platform), data scientists and agile practitioners organized into chapters. You would be joining our Software Engineering Chapter.

From these chapters we build cross-functional squads delivering business value. These are tight-knit Scrum teams working with product owners and business stakeholders to determine insights required and to deliver them. Our engineers are committed to applying technology to drive results and advocate for appropriate solutions.

The role

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic professional who will be a key and influential member of the Hiscox London Market Engineering Team, within the Software Engineering Chapter. In this role you will work in one of our squads as we create new cloud-first solutions to add value to the business, while supporting and transforming our existing on-prem and cloud systems. We are looking for someone aligned with modern software engineering practices and ready to embrace AI-enabled development tools and adapt to the evolving space as we move toward an agentic SDLC to enable rapid delivery of high-quality value.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with your squad and stakeholders, taking a technical leading role in shaping and delivering business outcomes.
  • Write and review clean, maintainable code, guiding others on best practices such as SOLID principles, design patterns, unit testing, peer reviews, and CI/CD processes.
  • Ensure documentation is accurate and up to date, and mentor team members on maintaining high-quality story documentation and technical clarity.
  • Actively support and mentor team members by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • Guide and contribute to solution design, translating requirements into scalable and maintainable implementations in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with engineers across teams to influence and evolve our architecture, promoting best practices and alignment.
  • Champion security and engineering standards, ensuring work adheres to organisational guidelines.
  • Adopt new ways of working, including AI-assisted development tools, and help the team navigate the evolving engineering landscape towards an agentic SDLC.
  • Foster effective collaboration with distributed teams across the United Kingdom, Portugal, Poland, and India, promoting alignment and consistency in delivery.

Skills

  • Candidates should hold an academic degree in a related field (or 5+ years in a Software Engineering role), with increasing responsibility in delivery and technical decision-making.
  • Strong hands-on experience in C# and .NET, with the ability to design, develop, and review high-quality code and write effective unit tests.
  • Solid background in SQL, with proven experience in designing, optimising, and maintaining databases in production environments.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and a solid understanding of source control systems and branching strategies, with the ability to influence and improve team practices.
  • Experience with Azure technologies such as Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Azure Storage, Azure API Management (APIM) and Azure Service Bus, especially in designing and implementing event-driven or messaging-based architectures.
  • Familiarity with modern front-end technologies such as Blazor, Angular, or React is beneficial, with the ability to contribute to or guide the development of responsive user interfaces.

Behaviours

  • Demonstrates strong technical competence and takes ownership of delivering high-quality software solutions.
  • Communicates clearly and collaborates effectively with team members, stakeholders, and cross-functional partners.
  • Open to feedback, actively learns new technologies and shares knowledge with colleagues to support team success.
  • Seeks to understand business objectives and contributes solutions that deliver tangible customer and business value.
  • Makes informed, risk-aware decisions within their area of responsibility and escalates issues appropriately when needed.
  • Consistently follows engineering standards, best practices, and secure software development principles.
  • Approaches problems with curiosity, analytical thinking, and a pragmatic mindset, balancing quality, time, and business needs.
  • Adapts positively to changing priorities, new technologies, and evolving business requirements.
  • Contributes to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, tools, and ways of working.
  • Builds positive working relationships through professionalism, empathy, and respect for diverse perspectives.
  • Takes accountability for personal development and actively seeks opportunities to expand technical and domain knowledge.
  • Supports team success by being dependable, collaborative, and willing to help others when needed.
