The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity is available for a Senior Software Engineer / Developer to join IP Australia's AI Factory within Business Delivery Services.
You’ll work at the intersection of software engineering, AI and emerging technologies, delivering production capabilities alongside data scientists, machine learning engineers, business analysts and subject matter experts.
This is an ideal opportunity for a senior developer with strong Python and AWS experience who is interested in applying emerging technologies and AI within a government environment.

Contract: 12 months + 2 × 12-month extensions
Start: 26 October 2026
Location: Canberra preferred; QLD, VIC, NSW also considered
Working arrangement: Hybrid
Security: Must be able to obtain Baseline
Level: Senior / EL1 equivalent
Hours: Up to 8 hours per day
Remote candidates may be considered within the same time zone. Offsite candidates will need to attend the Canberra office for 2-3 days during onboarding, with occasional travel to Canberra thereafter, typically twice and no more than four times per year. Travel is at the candidate's own expense.
What You'll Be Doing
Develop and deliver software components alongside software developers, data scientists and ML engineers
Build and maintain production capabilities within a multidisciplinary Agile team
Deliver Proofs of Concept with Subject Matter Experts
Develop solutions using AWS, particularly serverless technologies
Contribute to the responsible application of AI and emerging technologies
Maintain and continuously improve existing production systems
Contribute to technical documentation, code quality and development practices
Essential Technical Experience
Python
AWS, particularly serverless application development
Infrastructure-as-Code, preferably AWS CDK
CI/CD, particularly AWS CodePipeline
DevOps tools and practices
Experience delivering and maintaining production software
Experience working within multidisciplinary software development teams
Desirable Experience
JavaScript and/or TypeScript
Vue.js
AI and Machine Learning
MLOps
Emerging AI technologies
Selection Criteria
Candidates will need to demonstrate:
1. AWS - 35%
Experience building and maintaining solutions using AWS.
2. Python - 35%
Experience building and maintaining software using Python.
3.
DevOps - 20%
Experience delivering software using DevOps tools and practices.
4. Government / Multidisciplinary Experience - 10%
Experience working collaboratively within a dynamic, multidisciplinary software development team in a government agency.
