Job Category: IPD & Construction Services Requisition Number: RESID006867 Employment Type: Full-Time, On-site Location Brown and Caldwellâs (BC) Vancouver, B.C. officeâresident engineer opportunity, located on the project site in Vancouver on a daily basis. Job Overview Resident Engineer with experience in construction of complex water and wastewater infrastructure and facilities. Works closely with the project team, owner, contractors, and design engineers to deliver multiple projects for a wastewater treatment plant expansion.
Selfâmotivated individual enjoys variety of opportunities in engineering and construction consulting. Positive client interaction and an understanding of construction are essential to success. The role provides technical oversight and leads monitoring and documentation of construction activities on large projects, ensuring compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes, and permits.
Leads site inspections, prepares and reviews detailed reports, and guides collaboration with contractors, engineers of record, and project control team members. Provides resolution of multifaceted field issues, supports contract administration through independent evaluation of change orders and payment applications, and ensures integrity of project documentation and closeâout processes. Supports the Project Manager by coordinating quality review processes, updating project status reports and invoicing, tracking project budgets, and overall coordination of execution.
Responsibilities Review construction work progress daily. Oversee all construction activities, ensuring full compliance with plans, specifications, codes, standards, and permit requirements. Oversee use of varied construction information management systems.
Validate documentation process to ensure reportsâweather, equipment, manpower, construction activities, daily progress photos, and monthly progress reportsâare completed accurately and timely. Evaluate and advise on change orders, invoices, and payment applications, including final payment. Audit and ensure accurate records are maintained for base work, contingency, and field changes.
Provide technical expertise in commissioning, testing, and startâup of process systems/equipment or facilities. Lead records documentation process to ensure accurate project, permit, and contract closeâout documentation. Review and recommend on design and bidding documents to enhance constructability, reduce risk, and improve delivery outcomes.
Lead risk assessments and develop and execute mitigation strategies. Lead auditing of complex records related to base work, contingency usage, and field changes. Collaborate and facilitate resolution of complex issues with clients, owners, consultants, contractors, designers, and regulatory agencies.
Adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs. Coordinate work among Engineers of Record to solve a range of problems and discuss solutions with clients. Prepare monthly progress reports updating the client on the status of the project and support monthly consultant invoicing.
May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledgeâsharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills. Skills and Competencies Advanced knowledge of building products, construction details, and relevant rules, regulations, local and national building codes, and quality standards. Expertise in reading and interpreting construction plans, drawings, specifications, and contractual documents.
Advanced verbal and written communication and organizational skills working with multidisciplinary teams. Expertise in safety requirements. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in daily execution while coordinating with engineering, field management, and building trade staff.
Knowledge of project management fundamentalsâschedule, budget, scope, and change managementâand effective communication with third parties. Ability to perform site inspections of varying size and topography and stand for several hours to document critical activities. Experience Typically, a minimum of 5 years of work experience in resident engineering or a related field.
Professional licensure in British Columbia (e.g., P.Eng.). Preferred Experience 10+ years of increasingly responsible, professional experience in design and construction administration of municipal infrastructure, water, and wastewater facilities. Thorough working knowledge of civil, structural, architectural, process, and building mechanical and electrical construction and demolition practices for major publicâworks projects.
Project Management experience of major municipal infrastructure projects, including Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Education A degree in engineering or construction management or related field, or equivalent experience is required.
