Job Description
Overview Registered Nurse III (Evening shift) - (260000HF) — Department of Mental Health, Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center. The center is a 60-bed inpatient psychiatric facility providing comprehensive evaluation and care to support recovery.
Duties and Responsibilities Provides nursing care for patients by following professional, hospital, departmental and certification standards to maintain quality care. Identifies and addresses patient needs by performing nursing assessments and developing nursing interventions. Assumes charge nurse responsibility on an as needed basis to provide critical thinking, prioritization, and delegation of patient care needs.
Supervises employees of a lesser grade by assigning tasks, evaluating performance, and making recommendations to maintain high-quality care. Performs duties of medication nurse by administering medication, communicating with physicians, transcribing orders, maintaining controlled counts and documenting to maintain accurate records. Works with patients by providing instruction to facilitate the independent management of their personal hygiene and health needs.
Admits, transfers and discharges patients, coordinating health care services to ensure continuity of care following hospital policy and certification guidelines. Identifies, evaluates, and responds to changes in patient conditions, documenting and reporting such changes to appropriate personnel to ensure prompt response to patient needs. Provides psychosocial support to patients through individual counseling and group work to maintain the therapeutic milieu.
Performs duties of assigned staff in their absence to ensure continuity of care. Maintains awareness of DMH regulations and hospital policies regarding seclusion and restraint to maintain patient dignity and human rights. Maintains professional proficiencies by attending and participating in in-service trainings and educational programs to foster growth and development.
Practices safety, hope and healing to provide a safe environment, and communicates standards to nursing staff in line with DMH, CMS, JC and HIPAA requirements. Required Qualifications Knowledge of the problems in providing nursing services in a general/psychiatric setting. Knowledge of supervision principles including planning and assigning work according to job needs.
Ability to participate in a multidisciplinary team. Preferred Qualifications Ability to interact with people under physical and/or emotional stress. Bilingual or multilingual fluency is preferred given the population served.
Important Notes Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week on unit 5 east, 2:45 p.m. to 11:15 p.m. Days off are Week A: Sunday and Friday and Week B: Tuesday and Saturday. Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.
