Job DescriptionRole Title:Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner (RANP): Cardiology (Arrhythmia) Job Reference Number:002534 Closing Date:Monday, 3rd August 2026 Purpose of the Role: The advanced practice service is provided by nurses who practice at a higher level of capability as independent, autonomous and expert advanced practitioners. The overall purpose of the service is to provide safe, timely, evidenced based nurse-led care to patients at an advanced nursing level. This involves undertaking and documenting complete episodes of patient care, which includes comprehensively assessing, diagnosing, planning, treating, and discharging patients in accordance with collaboratively agreed local policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines and/or service level agreements/memoranda of understanding.

The RANP in Cardiology (Arrhythmia) demonstrates advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, clinical leadership, and complex decision-making abilities. The RANP in Cardiology (Arrhythmia) practices in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives (NMBI 2025), Advanced Practice (Nursing) Standards and Requirements (NMBI 2017), and the Values for Nurses and Midwives in Ireland (Department of Health 2016). The RANP in Cardiology (Arrhythmia) service provides clinical leadership and professional scholarship in the delivery of optimal nursing services and informs the development of evidence based health policy at local, regional, and national levels.

The RANP in Cardiology (Arrhythmia) contributes to nursing research which shapes and advances nursing practice, education and health care policy at local, national, and international levels. This Cardiology ANP role is responsible for care of Cardiology patients throughout their journey, from pre-admission, peri-operatively and post discharge. The ANP will be part of a Cardiac Arrhythmia Multidisciplinary team, and will run a nurse led preadmission assessment clinic for cardiology patients who require access to Cardiac Arrhythmia and related Heart disease services in SJH and work closely with the multi-disciplinary team in the management and care of inpatients.

This RANP role involves undertaking and documenting a complete episode of patient care, according to collaboratively agreed protocols and scope of practice in this clinical setting; demonstrating advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, clinical leadership and decision making skills. The advanced practice role demonstrates a high degree of knowledge, skill and experience that is applied within the nurse-patient/client relationship to achieve optimal outcomes through critical analysis, problem solving and accurate decision-making (NMBI, 2017). Central to this is the provision of quality care, a safe environment and processes for patients by the use of evidence based clinical guidelines that address patient expectations, promote wellness and evaluate care given.

The role will provide clinical leadership and professional scholarship in order to develop nursing practice and health policy at local, regional and national level. The role will contribute to nursing research to shape and advance nursing practice, education and health care policy at local, national and international levels Required: Professional Qualifications and Experience Eligible applicants must: Be a Registered Nurse or Midwife on the NMBIs Active Register. Annual registration: Practitioners must maintain active annual registration on the Advanced Nurse Practitioner Division of the register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnimhseachais na hireann) for the role.

Must possess the requisite knowledge and ability including a high standard of suitability and clinical, professional and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role. And Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC). And Demonstrate I.T. skills including excellent keyboard skills.

Experience in teaching and assessing junior staff/nursing students. Experience in conducting audits. Desired: Working knowledge of healthcare patient record systems.
