Project and Operations Manager
Instratus Monitoring
Job Description
Instratus Monitoring Ltd. is a specialized engineering firm, founded in 2020, providing automated construction instrumentation and monitoring services for projects across BC and Western Canada. We design, integrate, and implement monitoring programs for vibration, sound, geotechnical, structural, and water quality parameters. Our clients include general contractors, engineering consultancies, and public infrastructure owners on projects ranging from highway construction to commercial development to dam safety monitoring.
The Role Instratus is seeking a Project & Operations Manager to join our team in Burnaby, BC. This is a senior role requiring a candidate who thinks like a business owner, takes initiative without direction, and maintains a clear view of the big picture while remaining willing to do the hands-on work when required. This role will serve as the day-to-day leader for the team, providing clear technical direction to staff and reliable, professional communication to clients.
The successful candidate will work directly with the principal to manage projects, lead staff, write proposals, and contribute to the strategic direction of the business. Specifically, the role will involve: Leadership & Operations Providing daily leadership, direction, and mentoring to field technicians and junior staff, ensuring they understand the what and why behind each task, not just the how. Managing project schedules, resource allocation, and workload planning across multiple concurrent monitoring programs.
Taking ownership of operational workflows, identifying inefficiencies, and implementing improvements. Supporting the principal with business planning, strategic decision-making, and company growth initiatives. Client Relations & Business Development Writing technical proposals, monitoring plans, and project reports to a professional standard.
Communicating with clients, general contractors, and consulting engineers to ensure project requirements are understood and met. Supporting business development efforts, including reviewing tender documents, preparing bid submissions, and identifying new service opportunities. Technical & Field Support Providing technical oversight for the design, integration, and commissioning of instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
Troubleshooting and resolving instrumentation issues, both remotely and in the field when required. Reviewing monitoring data, configuring alarm thresholds, and managing our digital data platform for client reporting. Getting onsite when needed to support field work, resolve problems, or oversee critical installations.
This is a full-time, in-office position based at our Burnaby location, with field visits to local and remote construction project sites as needed. Travel will be required for projects outside of the Lower Mainland on occasion. We are a flexible workplace and understand that life happens, but this role requires a consistent in-person presence because the people you’ll be leading are here every day.
Qualifications Must have a valid Canadian driver’s licence and vehicle Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related technical field (geology, geophysics, engineering technology, etc.). Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered for the right candidate. 8+ years of experience in construction, infrastructure, or engineering services, with demonstrated project management responsibility Experience with geotechnical or structural instrumentation (piezometers, inclinometers, vibration monitors, total stations, data acquisition systems) is a strong asset. Candidates without direct instrumentation experience but with a strong technical background and the right mindset will be considered.
Prior experience supervising, mentoring, or managing technical staff Registration or eligibility to register as a P.Eng. with EGBC is preferred Business development or client management experience is a strong asset What We’re Looking For Beyond qualifications and experience, we are looking for a specific type of person. The right candidate will be: Self-driven. You see what needs to be done and do it.
You identify problems, develop solutions, and act on them. An exceptional communicator. You write clearly and professionally.
You can translate technical field work into proposals, reports, and client correspondence. You can give clear, concise direction to field staff and articulate project status to engineers and project owners alike. A big-picture thinker who sweats the details.
You understand business priorities, but you also know that the details matter: in the data, in the proposal, and in the field. Technically curious. You are comfortable working with mechanical and electronic systems, or at minimum eager to learn.
You can figure out how things work and enjoy the challenge of integrating hardware, software, and field conditions into a functioning system. Willing to get your hands dirty. This is a management role, but there will be times when you need to be onsite working alongside the team, whether that’s troubleshooting a sensor or helping mobilize equipment to a remote site.
Organized and accountable. You manage your own time effectively, keep projects on track, and follow through on commitments. You can handle a wide variety of tasks and shifting priorities.
Physically capable. Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks including standing for long periods, traversing uneven ground, and lifting and moving heavy materials when required in the field. The Opportunity Instratus offers the opportunity to work in a niche construction engineering field developing, implementing, and managing custom-tailored monitoring solutions for a wide array of unique projects.
This is not a role where you will be a cog in a large machine. You will have direct influence on how the company operates, how projects are delivered, and where the business goes next. Working alongside the principal, you will help build the systems, standards, and team culture that will define Instratus as it grows.
For the right person, this role has significant room to evolve, both in scope and in compensation, as the company scales. We are offering a starting annual salary of $110,000 to $140,000 based on experience and fit. Additional compensation includes overtime pay, mileage reimbursement, as well as holiday, live-out, and performance-based bonuses.
Please note that only candidates in (or willing to relocate to) the Lower Mainland of BC will be considered. We thank all interested applicants, however, only those under consideration will be contacted.
