Principal Engineer

As the Principal Engineer for Financial Crime and Fraud, you will be the most senior engineering leader in this critical domain. You will be responsible for implementing and operating critical systems that protect our customers and the bank from financial crime. This role combines deep technical expertise, architectural thinking, and strategic influence to ensure our systems are secure, scalable, and sustainable.

You will provide technical leadership across multiple teams, guiding the technical evolution of all systems that support Financial Crime and Fraud and act as a trusted advisor to Engineering Managers, Product Owners, and senior leadership. By championing modern engineering practices and fostering a culture of excellence, you will solve complex engineering problems, reduce technical risk, and uplift the capability of our entire engineering community.

In this role you’ll get to…

• Lead the implementation and operation of core systems and platforms to combat financial crime and fraud.
• Shape the long-term technical vision and strategy for the domain through collaboration, prototyping, and architectural modelling.
• Act as a senior mentor and technical coach, building engineering capability through deep dives, design reviews, and pairing.
• Partner with product and other engineering leaders to align priorities and reduce delivery risk.
• Promote best practices in testing, observability, security, performance, and deployment, with a goal of full automation in all these areas.
• Ensure that our systems meet regulatory and security requirements and provide evidence to internal and external auditors as needed to demonstrate compliance through engineering practices.

What you’ll bring to the role

To be successful in the role you will have: …

• Extensive experience as a senior engineer and technical leader, with a proven track record of delivering high-impact technical systems.
• Experience within the Financial Crime and Fraud Risk landscape with a deep understanding of supporting technologies.
• Deep expertise in operating critical systems, automation at all levels, distributed systems and network protocols, incident triage, and software architecture.in relation to COTS specifically.
• Excellent communication and influence skills to guide teams and engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• A background in regulated environments, with familiarity with the Australian financial services regulatory landscape being highly desirable.
• Experience leading through mentorship and thought leadership to uplift engineering culture and standards.
