Pavement Engineer
AECOM
Job Description
Job Summary
We are seeking a Junior Pavement Engineer/Pavement Engineer to join our growing Pavements team within the Linear Infrastructure group. The role supports highways, civil, and aviation programs from feasibility through detailed design, tender, and construction support. You will contribute to pavement‑led assignments such as condition assessments, investigations, life‑cycle analysis, and multidisciplinary projects for public and private sector clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Support delivery of pavement design inputs for flexible, rigid, and composite pavements across highways, airfields, and civil sites (analysis, calculations, design reports, drawings, BoQs, and specifications).
- Assist in pavement investigations and condition assessments (planning and interpreting FWD/GPR/coring/DCP data, visual surveys, materials testing review, and deterioration analysis).
- Support rehabilitation and maintenance option evaluations, life‑cycle cost analysis, and prioritization of treatment strategies aligned to client budgets and performance targets.
- Prepare and check CAD deliverables and design models (in coordination with digital and CAD teams) ensuring all outputs comply with applicable standards and client requirements.
- Contribute to tender documentation, method statements, and technical notes, and support responses to technical queries during construction.
- Collaborate with geotechnical, highways, drainage, structures, traffic, and construction teams to integrate pavement solutions effectively.
- Maintain project quality, health & safety, and risk management practices; follow internal QA/QC procedures and document control protocols.
- Engage with clients in meetings and workshops, presenting analyses and recommendations clearly and professionally.
- Support programming and reporting of tasks (scope, schedule, progress updates) and contribute to small work packages with guidance from senior engineers.
- Assist with data management (survey datasets, GIS layers, laboratory results) and help develop repeatable templates and digital workflows.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or closely related field) with focus/interest in pavements, highways, and/or geotechnical engineering.
- 2–5 years’ experience in pavement design, investigation, or rehabilitation planning (internships and placements considered).
- Working knowledge of relevant standards in at least one geography, such as Austroads, UK DMRB/MCHW, AASHTO/ME, or FAA guidance.
- Familiarity with pavement design principles (mechanistic empirical concepts, traffic/loading, materials characterization, subgrade behavior, drainage considerations).
- Proficiency in MS Office and basic CAD (e.g., AutoCAD/Civil 3D or equivalent) with the ability to prepare clear sketches and mark‑ups for design development.
- Strong analytical and written communication skills with attention to detail in calculations, reporting, and presentation of results.
- Collaborative mindset, eagerness to learn, and ability to manage priorities in a fast‑paced, multi‑project environment.
Highly Valued (Nice to Have)
- Experience with pavement tools (e.g., AASHTOWare Pavement ME, Circly, KENPAVE, EverStress, or equivalent) and data interpretation for FWD, GPR, and IRI.
- Exposure to materials testing (binders, asphalt, concrete, granulars), specifications, and mix‑design fundamentals.
- Familiarity with GIS workflows for asset mapping and program planning, or basic scripting for data processing (e.g., Excel VBA/Python).
- Experience supporting Design & Build projects or public‑sector frameworks.
- Field experience (site investigations, construction monitoring, QA checks) and awareness of site safety protocols.
- Work or academic exposure aligned to Australia, USA, UK, Canada, or Middle East standards and practices.
What You’ll Gain
- Opportunities to work on diverse, high‑profile infrastructure portfolios across multiple regions.
- Mentorship from senior pavement, geotechnical, and highway engineers and a structured pathway for professional development/chartership.
- A collaborative environment focused on technical excellence, digital delivery, and continuous learning.
