Manager, Technology Engineer Manager (Database Platform Engineering)

Overview

Nationwide’s Technology team is looking for an experienced people‑first leader to manage a team of Database Platform Engineers. The role works a hybrid schedule, coming into the Columbus, Ohio office two days per week (Mondays & Wednesdays), and is accountable for leading engineering execution, advancing platform reliability and scalability, and developing a high‑performing team that delivers secure, resilient, and efficient database capabilities across the enterprise.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and develop a team of Database Platform Engineers responsible for engineering, automation, vulnerability management, and support of enterprise database platforms.
• Drive the evolution of database platforms through standardization, automation, self‑service capabilities, and engineering best practices.
• Partner with architects, application teams, infrastructure teams, and security partners to deliver scalable, resilient, and secure platform solutions.
• Establish and improve platform health measures, service objectives, engineering metrics, and operational insights.
• Support the team during major incidents and complex service events, while driving long‑term improvements that reduce toil and increase platform stability.
• Create a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and product‑mind‑ed platform delivery.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in operational management concepts and techniques; 3+ years of management experience preferred.
• Experience leading multiple teams and managing assets across various technology platforms (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
• Strong knowledge of database platforms, automation, vulnerability management, and best practices for reliability and scalability.
• Proficiency in project management, budgeting, financial analysis, and risk analysis.
• Excellent analytical, decision‑making, interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.
• Knowledge of technology certifications (AWS, Azure, scripting) is encouraged but not required.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to Director/AVP, Technology Engineering Manager / Technology Product Manager. Responsible for direct management of three or more technology professionals.

Job Conditions

Overtime eligibility: Exempt (Not eligible). Working conditions: Normal office environment, with non‑standard or extended work periods possible based on project needs. Some travel may be required.
