Job Summary Operated by the Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University and located on the Sexton Campus in Halifax’s vibrant downtown innovation district, the Emera ideaHUB accelerates the development of innovative physical products. Reporting to the Emera ideaHUB Associate Director, the Lead Engineer will lead and manage mechanical-based engineering and technical activities in the Emera ideaHUB, and assist in the management of student competitive design teams and industrial outreach initiatives. Key Responsibilities Support the Faculty’s innovation and entrepreneurship activities principally through the Emera ideaHUB, by providing engineering expertise to founders and companies going through the Emera ideaHUB’s programming.

Develop and provide engineering recommendations to clients (faculty/staff and Emera ideaHUB companies) on design and/or construction of equipment, devices, and processes. Supervise activities and oversee safety of those operating in the Emera ideaHUB. Assist in coordination of Emera ideaHUB activities with outside corporations and partners including Volta, Innovacorp, NSCAD and Acadia University.

Act as a liaison between parties and third-party vendors, to ensure appropriate specifications, testing, and/or certifications for prototypes. Support student competitive design teams, assisting in the management of student teams and their budgets. Work with faculty to meet objectives within logistical constraints of the student facilities.

Assist with the selection and purchase of materials and prototypes. Hold significant knowledge of the operation of the Faculty’s computer-numerically-controlled machining equipment. Ensure regular maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment and vehicles is carried out.

Research, source, recommend, and procure equipment and materials for faculty facilities. In conjunction with the workshop technical support staff, advise students how to use workshop equipment with an emphasis on its safe operation and controls access to the workshops. Note Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

This position requires heavy physical effort including long periods of standing in one location; bending; kneeling; pushing/pulling; dragging; hammering; or otherwise lifting and carrying up to 60+ lbs. Required Qualifications Bachelor of Engineering degree plus approximately 3-5 years’ relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience) as well as registered, or eligible for registration, with Engineers Nova Scotia – the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia ( APENS ). Demonstrated experience in project management, workplace safety, prototype development and design, and research support services.

Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and communication (verbal and written) skills. Excellent organizational, leadership and management skills with the proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering.

Experience in a university setting and/or in instrumentation. Crane training, forklift certification, and/or a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license.
