Introduction Manitoba Transportation & Infrastructure is seeking to fill 1 full time regular Forecast Engineer position. Duties The Forecast Engineer is responsible for the provision of flood forecasts and information on the basins hydrologic conditions, which are used for flood preparedness and flood damage reduction by all three levels of government, for operation of the province’s water control structures, and for public safety and flood risk awareness. Major position responsibilities include development of hydrologic forecasting methodologies including advanced hydrologic models and real time application of such methodologies.

The Engineer also prepares flood outlook reports, communicates flood risk to the public and advises the director on basin conditions. Qualifications Undergraduate degree in engineering (Civil preferred) or closely related discipline such as a degree in Science with specialization in Hydrology (Masters degree preferred) Extensive experience in hydrologic modelling, model calibration, verification and implementation for practical uses to solve real time water management problems. Extensive experience in hydro-meteorological data analysis using GIS and Excel and preparing the data for operational decision making.

Knowledge of hydraulic routing, flood risk mapping and hydrological processes in relation to cold climate. Ability to work in a fast paced environment with multi-tasked team and working extended hours as needed to meet time sensitive demands for public safety. Strong written communication skills including the ability to prepare technical and non-technical correspondence and reports and corresponding directly with the public on sensitive issues.

Ability to undertake independent research and develop proposals to introduce new industry innovations into department operations. Knowledge of Workplace Safety and Health work practices.
