About the role
We are looking for a pragmatic, people-focused Engineering Manager to guide the team responsible for creating, operating and modernising Bay's software products. Reporting to the General Manager, you will lead a five-person multidisciplinary team spanning .NET development, infrastructure and test automation, while partnering closely with our Product Manager.
This is a business-critical leadership role. You will shape an AI-first engineering capability, strengthen our secure software development lifecycle, guide architecture and technology decisions, and oversee DevOps and our Azure-based SaaS environment. You will contribute from time to time in production-code and bring the technical credibility to guide design, support complex pull requests and coach the team.
This is a permanent full-time role based in our Milton office in Brisbane, with hybrid work arrangements available.
Primary responsibilities
- Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team, setting clear priorities, standards and accountability.
- Build a governed AI-first development approach, including approved tools, team capability, human review and measurable quality and productivity improvements.
- Partner with the Product Manager to overhaul and modernise Bay's product portfolio and translate product priorities into sustainable technical roadmaps.
- Own and improve Agile delivery practices, pull-request discipline, test automation, CI/CD and engineering release readiness.
- Own and maintain Bay's Secure Development Policy and secure-coding expectations, aligned with ISO 27001, ASD ISM guidance and recognised industry practice.
- Review application and cloud architecture, guide complex technical decisions and recommend material technology choices to the General Manager.
- Oversee DevOps and the security, reliability, resilience, performance and cost awareness of Bay's Azure-based SaaS environment.
- Monitor relevant technology trends and introduce practical improvements suited to an SME serving critical government customers.
Required skills & experience
- A relevant tertiary qualification in information technology, computer science, software engineering or a related discipline.
- At least seven years of relevant software-engineering experience, including at least three years in formal engineering or development-team leadership.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams and Agile software delivery.
- Strong working knowledge of modern application architecture, secure software development, DevOps, automated testing and SaaS operations.
- Experience with GitHub or GitLab source control and GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD or equivalent delivery pipelines.
- A clear, constructive communication style and the confidence to make concise recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Valid Australian working rights and the ability to obtain a satisfactory security checks.
Highly regarded
- Experience leading Azure-hosted SaaS products and/or Azure Solutions Architect certification.
- Experience with software serving Australian government or regulated customers.
