As part of that commitment, we are growing our Safety, Health and Employee Wellbeing team and we are now seeking to engage an experienced and pragmatic Engineering Health and Safety Advisor to enhance our team of competent Subject Matter Experts. and act as the lead advisor to our Faculty of Engineering and Design. In this role, you will also provide support to our Core Research Facilities services, and on occasion to colleagues in other departments across campus.

About the role

As the competent subject matter lead in Engineering Safety matters, you'll be responsible for:

  • A main contact for engineering -related safety matters, providing advice and guidance, and acting as the University's appointed competent subject matter lead on engineering and related health and safety matters.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of elements of the University's Safety Management System and driving fire safety improvements to foster a proactive health and safety culture.
  • Conducting health and safety audits and inspections to monitor practice and performance, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Training: Developing, implementing, and delivering engineering-related safety training.

This is a varied role based within the University's Safety, Health and Employee Wellbeing Service, and you’ll join a specialist team providing support, advice and guidance across the University.

The role is predominantly based on the University's Claverton Down campus, although there will be some scope for hybrid working (normally up to 2 days per week off-campus subject to role commitments). We are open to a job share arrangement for this role. Please state your interest within your application.

About You

We’re looking for significant experience of advising on health and safety within a complex environment across a large organisation and a diverse range of activities. Ideally that will have been gained in a research-intensive setting working closely with

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and the practical application of this in a complex engineering environment. This should include practical experience in one or more relevant engineering (chemical, mechanical, electronic and electrical, architectural or civil engineering) disciplines.
  • You will need the ability to apply that knowledge creatively and confidently across a range of contexts and challenges.
  • Practical knowledge and experience of DSEAR regulation requirements in relation to emerging sustainable technologies (such as battery or Hydrogen technologies).
  • Excellent written and verbal skills whilst working with, providing advice to, training, and promoting excellence in health and safety to staff members at all levels.
  • A proactive and engaging approach to help foster a positive safety culture, especially among those managing engineering teaching and research health and safety hazards and risks.
  • The ability to empower others to improve performance and ensure compliance to relevant health and safety standards.
  • Experience of collaborating closely with external regulatory authorities.

You will also need to have 

  • A relevant health and safety qualification at Level 6 or higher.
  • Demonstrable commitment to continuing professional development.
