Electorate & Community Officer (Speech Writer/ Research Officer)

The primary focus of this role is speechwriting and research. The successful applicant will work closely with the Honourable Rebecca Hewett MLC to research, develop and prepare compelling speeches, parliamentary contributions and public communications that clearly articulate One Nation’s positions and priorities.

The role will also provide high-quality parliamentary research and drafting support, including preparing briefs, analysing legislation, and assisting with bills and amendments. This is a part‑time position suited to an experienced, highly capable professional who can work independently, exercise sound political judgement and consistently produce work to a high standard.

Key Responsibilities

Speechwriting and Communications

  • Research, draft and refine speeches for parliamentary debates, public events, media appearances and community engagements.
  • Translate complex policy, legislative and political issues into clear, persuasive and accessible language.
  • Prepare speaking notes, talking points, opinion pieces, statements and other written material for the Member.
  • Ensure all written material is accurate, consistent with the Member’s voice and aligned with One Nation's policies and procedures.

Parliamentary Research and Legislative Support

  • Undertake detailed research and prepare concise, well‑evidenced briefs on legislation, policy and emerging issues.
  • Review and analyse bills, regulations, committee material and other parliamentary documents.
  • Assist with the preparation of bills, amendments, questions, motions and parliamentary contributions.
  • Maintain accurate records and source material to support the Member’s parliamentary work.

Office and Issue Support

  • Monitor news and media coverage to identify important issues, risks and opportunities requiring the Member’s attention.
  • Manage competing priorities, respond quickly to urgent matters and support the effective operation of the parliamentary office.
  • Use Microsoft Outlook, Teams and Copilot confidently to manage communications, collaborate and produce work efficiently.
  • Assist with other parliamentary, administrative and stakeholder tasks as required.

About You

You will be a highly motivated, efficient and adaptable professional who takes pride in producing accurate, polished work. You will be comfortable working in a fast‑paced political environment, able to manage multiple tasks at once, and capable of identifying what is most important and acting on it without unnecessary supervision.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience as a speechwriter, senior writer or communications professional, with the ability to write persuasively.
  • Excellent research, analytical and briefing skills, including the ability to quickly understand complex legislation and policy issues.
  • Outstanding written English, attention to detail and ability to produce high‑quality work under tight deadlines.
  • Strong organisational skills, flexibility and the ability to multitask, prioritise and manage competing demands.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Outlook, Teams and Copilot.
  • Sound judgement, discretion and the ability to handle confidential and politically sensitive information.
  • Strong alignment with Pauline Hanson’s One Nation policies, values and procedures.
  • Availability to commence as soon as possible.

Highly Desirable, but not essential

  • Previous experience working in a parliamentary office, ministerial office, political office or comparable government environment.
  • Knowledge of South Australia’s Legislative Council, parliamentary processes and legislative procedures.
  • Experience drafting or assisting with bills, amendments, motions, questions or committee material.

  • Part‑time appointment: 0.6 FTE, worked across three days per week.
  • The position is offered under the Members of South Australia Parliament Enterprise Agreement 2025.
  • Full‑time equivalent salary: $84,124 plus 12% employer superannuation, paid on a pro rata basis.
  • The salary includes a 15% overtime allowance for reasonable and expected overtime.
  • A background check or equivalent will be required.
