This influential position is central to embedding DSEAR best practice into design, supporting engineers and stakeholders to deliver compliant, safe and robust solutions across our Water and Wastewater infrastructure.
What You'll Be Doing
As a DSEAR Design Engineer, you'll provide specialist technical support and subject matter expertise across DSEAR and process safety. You'll work closely with Design Engineers, project teams and operational colleagues to identify, assess and reduce DSEAR risk at the design stage, applying the hierarchy of control to deliver safe, compliant solutions.
Your responsibilities will include:
Supporting designers with reducing DSEAR risk during design
Developing and supporting DSEAR risk assessments and Hazardous Area Classification (HAC)
Developing and supporting Flammable Liquids in Drainage Systems (FLIDS) assessments and calculations
Reviewing ventilation and extraction calculations and validating risk reduction measures
Reviewing ATEX design and specification to ensure compliance and suitability
Providing technical support to those managing high-risk processes
Carrying out consequence modelling to understand and mitigate the impact of fires and explosions
Supporting Process Hazard Analysis activities including HAZID, HAZOP, What-If and Bowtie workshops
Supporting Process Safety Change Management (PSCM)
Performing audits on high-risk sites
Supporting the development and maintenance of DSEAR standards and Codes of Practice
Providing technical input to formal reports, HSE Cases and other project deliverables
Supporting operational teams during handover of ATEX equipment to ensure it is safe to operate
Collaborating with internal teams and external partners to drive continuous improvement
Visiting sites across the region, including remote high-risk locations
About You
You'll bring strong technical credibility, sound judgement and the confidence to influence design decisions across multiple teams. You're analytical, collaborative and comfortable working in complex, safety-critical environments where getting it right really matters.
To be successful in this role, you'll need:
Degree in process engineering, electrical engineering or a related discipline
Minimum of two years' engineering experience supporting operations and/or projects
Experience in DSEAR and/or process safety
Solid understanding of process safety principles and hazard identification techniques
Experience contributing to or leading DSEAR Risk Assessments and Hazardous Area Classification
Familiarity with Management of Change, risk management and Process Hazard Analysis
Strong communication and collaboration skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and focus on work with the greatest risk impact
Willingness and ability to travel across the Anglian Water region
The below would be an advantage, however, appropriate training will be given,
CompEX 12a/12b Design
Holder of a nationally recognised safety qualification
Experience reviewing ATEX equipment design and specification
Knowledge of industry codes and standards
Ability to interpret P&IDs, PFDs and technical design documentation
Awareness of industry standard engineering and safety software packages
