Job Description
The Digital Marketing Associate is responsible for assisting with uploading content to JANM’s janm.org site, various other sites, and digital platforms. They will work closely with the Digital Program Manager, Marketing department, and other staff to add text and media using a CMS to create and edit pages on the janm.org website in both test and live environments, as well as provide support for other microsites. They will also assist with testing and development of new features, coordinate JANM’s digital photography library, and provide general support for the Marketing department.
This is a full-time, hybrid position, with a minimum of 3 days per week on-site, some remote, and some off-site marketing support work is required. Schedule is Monday–Friday with some flexibility in schedule.
- Update content on existing pages and sections on janm.org, as well as expand content/sections as needed, using a custom Drupal CMS, especially for homepage updates, events, press releases, exhibitions, podcasts, tours, special events and projects, Democracy Center microsite, about pages, etc. This includes working with other staff to compile text and media and arranging content on the web pages that is consistent with the overall museum and janm.org site style guides.
- Work with Digital Program Manager, Collections staff, curators, and other staff and contractors to develop virtual exhibitions using the new headless platform within janm.org. This will include organizing, preparing, and uploading text and media files, gathering feedback, making edits, and setting up on the live site. These will include at least one new significant virtual exhibition annually, as well as migrating older exhibitions to the new platform.
- Develop and update content for JANM’s Bloomberg Connect app guide, including adding information about JANM, exhibitions, and major events, and developing exhibition and audio tours.
- Maintain JANM’s digital photography library for Marketing, including coordinating volunteer and paid photographers, taking photos if others are not available, uploading and renaming photo files to the digital photography archives, etc.
- Work with marketing and other departments to organize and identify historical and contemporary images for use on janm.org, other microsites, outreach emails, social media, videos, and other projects. Use image editing software to format and adjust images as needed for optimal viewing online.
- Assist with testing of new features, enhancements, and fixes on the janm.org site. Assist with updates, new content, and testing to support other JANM websites/microsites—DiscoverNikkei.org, JANM Blog, etc. and other digital projects/apps.
- Migrate content from the legacy janm.org site to the current site that are important for institutional history—older major project and exhibition microsites, online resources, etc.
- Assist with creating content for social media, especially images and short videos. Serve as back‑up for social media postings.
- General Marketing department support, including assistance with events, JANM on the Go booths, organization and distribution of print collateral, etc.
- Staff members must be able to work with visitors of all ages to support the various events sponsored by JANM. Each staff member will be expected to work on a minimum of three museum‑wide events per year:
- JANM’s Gala & Online Auction—(off‑site) typically held in the Spring (April–May)
- JANM’s Oshogatsu Family Festival (January)
- JANM’s Natsumatsuri Family Festival (August)

Education
Bachelor’s degree preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience/Knowledge
At least 1 year of experience developing web content using a CMS. At least 1 year experience with image and video editing software, preferred Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with photography and digital photography management is preferred.
Willingness to learn and apply new skills. Ability to discern how to prioritize, plan and manage tasks according to firm deadlines, clearly communicate delays, and respond to requests in a timely manner is required. Being able to work well in a team as well as working independently is imperative.
Demonstrated commitment and flexibility in order to ensure a high level of quality service. Ability to adjust and provide appropriate action when unanticipated need arises. Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus.
Experience and familiarity with features testing and WCAG accessibility standards is a plus.
Communication
Has excellent communication skills. Experience in writing or editing copy for websites, photo captions. Must be able to provide courteous and effective service to co‑workers and volunteers.
Ability to represent the Museum externally to the public and internally to staff and volunteers. Is able to read, write, and comprehend routine reports and correspondence, including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Is able to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group format.
Computer
Demonstrated proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and Internet and web tools; Google Suite, MS Office, Slack, and Asana preferred. Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop or other image editing software; familiarity with electronic image formats such as .jpg, .png, and .tiff and with image size/resolution requirements for Web. Experience with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign a plus.
Proficiency with video editing software. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
Desired: Familiarity with Drupal or other web framework. Ability to write and edit basic HTML. Familiarity with SEO.
Math
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning
Ability to act on own initiative, making consistently sound decisions. Must be able to comply with institutional policies and procedures. Ability to perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload.
Ability to make practical decisions and solve problems, adapt to change and communicate effectively.
