Job Description Design Manager - (Wastewater Treatment Projects) As Design Manager, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team to bring water and wastewater infrastructure projects from the project brief stage to the detailed design stage and into construction. You will lead a team of multi-disciplinary engineers and appointed consultants to successfully bring projects from concept to implementation. The role is client‑facing, liaising directly with the client and their representatives to develop engineered solutions fostering innovation and sustainability.
Responsibilities Lead the design team and any appointed consultants in all aspects of the design scope. Develop a design budget at outset and monitor expenditure against budget. Represent the company at design review workshops and HAZOPs, ensuring all resulting actions are closed in a timely manner.
Co‑ordinate the role of PSDP for the design phase, ensuring best practice prevention principles are adopted. Ensure best practice design management and develop a design programme at the start of each project and monitor throughout. Monitor project performance including risk and opportunities, mitigate/reduce risk where possible, and manage opportunities.
Report on the monthly performance of projects to the framework manager, including performance against programme, key milestones and workshop stages. Prepare costed proposals for final design or at intervals as required under the contract. Provide a review of final design and contract documentation and give feedback on red‑line documents.
Build and promote industry‑leading teams by providing training and mentoring of staff, including setting out development plans. Actively involved in resource management and recruitment within the team as a hiring manager. Respond to and address any client and stakeholder complaints in a timely manner.
Obtain client satisfaction surveys and provide feedback on how to improve satisfaction. Seek to improve the design delivery process by providing lessons learned feedback and innovative solutions for future projects. Keep appraised of the latest standards and technology through continuous professional development (CPD).
Other duties as required from time to time. Qualifications Minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar role, preferably in the water and wastewater industry. Extensive working knowledge of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013.
Holder of a certificate in Designing Safely for Construction and/or PSDP coordination preferable. Experience in civil and process engineering works such as temporary works, bulk earthworks, tank systems, building works, process units and M&E installations. Minimum of a Level 8 Honours Degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Environmental Engineering.
Ability to work under pressure to deliver project objectives. Ability to work collaboratively with the client and their representatives in leading and developing design solutions. Good working knowledge of programme management software such as Microsoft Project.
Ability to prepare baseline programmes and programme updates. Ability to use own initiative, problem solve and adjust as issues arise during project delivery. Excellent working knowledge of MS Office packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project).
Strong communication skills and a high level of motivation.
